Dems Ignore Negroponte's Death Squad Past
At a Senate hearing on the appointment of John Negroponte to the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, Negroponte was never questioned about supporting widespread campaigns of terror and human rights abuses as ambassador to Honduras. We speak to a priest and a nun who lived in Latin America in the early 1980s as well as a human rights activist who disrupted Negroponte at the Senate hearing.

As ambassador to Honduras, Negroponte played a key role in coordinating US covert aid to the Contra death squads in Nicaragua and shoring up a CIA-backed death squad in Honduras. During his term as ambassador there, diplomats alleged that the embassy's annual human rights reports made Honduras sound more like Norway than Argentina. In a 1995 series, the Baltimore Sun detailed the activities of a secret CIA-trained Honduran army unit, Battalion 3-16, that used "shock and suffocation devices in interrogations. Prisoners often were kept naked and, when no longer useful, killed and buried in unmarked graves." In 1994, Honduras's National Commission for the Protection of Human Rights reported that it was officially admitted that 179 civilians were still missing.

3. This is true...
but the problem is that, officially at least, there never were any "death squads." Nor was there any "official" support of the Contras.

There were a few people convicted of messing around down there, but some of them are now "heroes" and talk show hosts, while others had their convictions overturned and were offered great jobs with the crew in power. Negroponte seems to have escaped much of the the original flack, and to bring it up now would bring up a shitstorm of return fire from the usual gang of idiots.

It's all very shady, and that particular can of worms was sealed tight under the Reagan and Bush I administrations. To open it up now would further confuse the issue and accomplish little.

Sometimes, it just really, really sucks knowing the truth and being able to do nothing with it. Kinda like living in a Ludlum novel.

It also really, really sucks knowing that the best we can get out of this is schadenfreude when this guy screws it up more than it already is. But, they'll try to worm their way out of that, too. Blame it on the Clenis, no doubt. Or Kerry. Put the blame everywhere but where it should go.

4. Does anyone have a quick list of who he was in front of for approval?
Help.

There is an action to be taken this morning, and it is only 6:30 East Coast Time.

Thank you.

history, we, their employers, do not have to let them.

THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE OUTRAGE. It is the equivalent of Kissinger being appointed to the 9-11 Commission (Disaster).

WE THE PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE TO STAND FOR THIS FINAL OUTRAGE.

NO MORE CRIMINALS. JUST SAY NO!!

Call, fax, google, get your facts straight. This man is a recognized criminal from the IRAN CONTRA AFFAIR.

Maybe Americans don't remember him, lots of other nations DO!

JUST SAY NO TO NEGROPONTE - If the Dems let this pass I am seriously concerned about our future.

On edit, I have been seriously concerned for a couple of years now. This is so not good. If Negroponte is Appointed, it is Game Over!
