Uri Geller Aims to Stop ABC Baby-Adoption TV Show

LONDON (Reuters) - Celebrity psychic Uri Geller said on Thursday he would try to take legal action to stop U.S. television station ABC going ahead with a "reality" show in which five couples compete to adopt a baby.

Geller claims the ABC 20/20 show is an exact rip-off of his yet-to-be published novel "Nobody's Child" which follows a reality TV game show where five couples compete to win a baby.

The ABC 20/20 show, titled "Be My Baby" which is due to be broadcast on Friday night, follows pregnant 16-year-old Jessica as she goes through the adoption process, whittling down prospective candidates to five couples.

Geller said he was friends with the show's host Barbara Walters and was puzzled why she had decided to do it.

Uri Geller is not exactly brimming with believability, but if he's been posting chapters of the book on his website, he probably has a real nice case.

I'm not a Geller fan, but if the news report is true, it seems like a transparent case of intellectual property theft. Maybe he can get one of the RIAA's lawyers.

I heard an interview this morning with a representative from the adoption agency that worked with 20/20 on the show.

This whole thing has been blown completely out of proportion by shoddy ABC marketing. The teaser promo gives the impression that the show is a "reality" show in which couples "compete" for a baby. But the agency claims the 20/20 episode is more like a documentary that details the "open adoption" procedure, in which the birth-mother does indeed interview and eventually select the family that gets her baby.

Apparently, this is a pretty common process in open adoptions.

Placing a child for adoption is a difficult decision for anybody, but somehow following a 16 year old girl as she makes this decision just doesn't seem right. She will be making one of the most important decisions of her life, and the whole time she will have a camera in her face.

Not to mention the 5 couples that they will be following. Trying to adopt a child is a very trying and emotional time. While one couple will get to adopt the child, there will be 4 families turned down. Do we really need to see their pain?

Now I understand that many in the country need to be educated on the adoption process and all that it entails, but is this really the way to go about it? Reality TV? We know that they are going to go in for the emotional close ups and what we see probably won't be quite the way things happened. They will be going for the big ratings.

I could be way off here, I have a horrible headache this morning, but this is the first I heard about this program and it just isn't sitting right with me.

And the tile of Geller's book "Nobody's Child" YUCK! What an awful title.
