Why is Bush so obsessed with body language?
I've heard him talk about this before. Certainly his manner when he's on the podium is strident, body forward, swinging fist, talking confidently, if moronically. As he said in this 911 press conference, he wanted the commish to see his body language and how he and Cheney interacted with each other. This must be a higher priority for him, his appearance, to the exclusion of ideas, debate, or command of the english language.

He's simply repeating what he's heard his handlers drill into his head about the importance of body language. But he hasn't processed the information that to talk openly about projecting an image immediately shatters the image.

20. Nah, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome
FAS usually manifests in certain facial characteristics he lacks. It's not only devastating to the brain, it also alters the appearance.

People who drink as heavily for as long as Bush has invariably have some degree of Wernicke-Korsakoff. Bush's is obvious.

Look at this:

Causes, incidence, and risk factors:
Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome usually affects people between 40 and 80 years old. The onset is gradual.

(snip)
...involves impairment of memory and intellect/cognitive skills such as problem solving or learning, along with multiple symptoms of nerve damage. The most distinguishing symptom is confabulation (fabrication) where the person makes up detailed, believable stories about experiences or situations to cover the gaps in the memory.

9. Not at all what I have noticed
You say you noticed this ~ "his manner when he's on the podium is strident, body forward, swinging fist, talking confidently,"
I notice the opposite. I see him laying on the podium, slouching to be exact, every other word is um, eh, amid long pauses of uncertainty. He demonstrates everything wrong that one can do when public speaking. In fact I have never seen a single thing you say you have witnessed.

17. I think a lot of people fixate on those strident mannerisms of
the wagging chin barking out something rather than hearing his er, um, and stumbling around (which reached, as we all know, a bizarre zenith in that semi-staged conference a couple of weeks ago which made him look like he was drugged). Personally, I cannot stand to even watch him, and have to force myself to do so. But we know a lot of people who find his manners presidential, confident-why? Because he attempts to use some pushy body language to compensate for his poor public speaking skllls (including, agreeing with you, the lack of oratory skills on a podium) and lack of informed substance.

26. The Michael Deaver principle.
To understand what is communicated by TV, watch it with the sound off.

Although Deaver is currently quoted, the principle has been clear for almost a century to directors of photography, film editors, etc.

What we see takes up much more substantive space in our consciousness than what we hear. Makes me wonder about the level of support for Reagan and Shrub among the blind or TV-less.

12. His handlers reward him with a biscuit for each expressive gesture.
It worked wonders for his poor diction, even though he still sounds like he is in front of a fifth-grade speech class, trying to impress the teacher.

Or maybe that's just from using the same earnest, little words that were used to explain things to him.

16. FWIW, here's my theory.
Bush can't use facts, observation, evidence to support his views or himself. Facts are against him, and he's not too competent at using them, anyway. In addition, facts, logical argument, statistics, and the education that would cause one to use them must be discredited, or they will make him look bad.

Hence, Bush must (MUST, since he has no other real options)present himself as guided by untestable sources of certainty: body language, his gut/instincts, faith, his "heart," God talking to him, etc. Hence, it's okay to laugh at knowledgeable, educated people (and their questions, if they're journalists) as "elites."

After God talks to him and he looks into someone's soul and reads his body language, he "knows" "in his heart/soul" what the truth is, and he will not be swayed (that's Bush being resolute, in his mind). We must have faith in his faith, and we may not question it, because it is "faith."

Nice little racket, isn't it?

38. Close
Bush is capable of using facts. He just doesn't care about them. They are irrelevant, because they very well may conflict with the "truth."
He truly believes this grandiose shit about being chosen by God. Don't think for a second that he doubts it. That is the heart of his narcissism. He does not need to find things out because God is on his side.
His body language is part of his contrived purporsful presentation of himself, and his arrogance.

40. Nice work if you can get it.
He can't read or understand or listen or learn. So he resorts to voodoo.

And his explanation is tautological - I believe it, because I believe it. I like this commentary on Bush logic:

To the Editor:

Re "Looking Through Keyholes" (column, April 27):

David Brooks (and the Bush administration) to Washington insiders (and the American public): "Don't question us on how or why we got into this war!"

"Why not?"

"Because there's a war on!"

He's the kind of actor you usually only see in school. He can mimic the TONE he thinks is appropriate even though he DOESN'T UNDERSTAND the WORDS he is saying. I've seen actors try to pull this off with Shakespeare. They mouth the words but don't know exactly what they're saying.

27. I smell a focus group result here: "body language"
Woodward in one of his interviews mentioned how much W notices people's body language and that that is as important to him as what they are saying. I think they focus grouped this and the results came back that W is so intuitive so streetwise and such.

Just a guess but for him to answer a question like that, that he knew he was going to get smacks of preperation and Rove leaves NOTHING to chance.

34. people who can't/won't read often do this ...
They end up picking up on other cues, to figure out what's going on. I know people who are functionally illiterate but quite proud of their ability to "get by" -- figuring out, based on body language and other things, how to avoid potentially dangerous situations, etc.

Bush is (probably) literate but has developed a persona for himself that involves scorning intellectuals -- hence his habit of claiming that he trusts "his gut" and not a bunch of policy specialists.

47. Actually this is the ONLY thing I agree with him on.
in every instance, watch peoples body language. It's almost impossible to disguise. Watch when you are talking to someone....if they lean back in their chair, they disagree with you...if they lean forward they agree. If someone won't look you directly in the eye when talking to you, they are usually lying. When someone comes to your office and leans on the door frame, it's a sign of affection.

Watch GW sometime. If he's comfortable with the question, he smiles and (tries to)answers the question. If he's uncomfortable, he fiddles with stuff on the podioum, switches his stance, turns and looks around.

It's all body language and it's tells a lot.
