Since they went to commercial quietly, the next thing you heard after the list of names was "AHM GEORGE BUSH, AND AHH APPROVE THIS MESSAGE"

He certainly did.

9. Yes, I believe it's in order
Hi,

I believe the names are being read in order....there are names that have been burned in my brain.

Anyone else crying? So many babies, 18, 19, 20 year olds. I've got a houseful of teens tonight...some are wondering in to watch. They are all very quiet. I hope they learn something watching this.

Tears,
Kim

68. a lot in their 30's and 40's too
Let's face it - there are a lot of dead in all categories.

When I saw how many in their 30's and 40's I thought about the families being destroyed. Children growing up without parents. Then the picture of the soldier holding the baby really slammed that home.

I also thought I would like to see a Nightline like this for the soldiers who have become disabled in Iraq. Of course it would take at least a week of Nightline episodes to recite that many names.

Very tasteful and respectful tribute. Bravo Nightline.

37. This is so powerful.
I put it on "in the background" while I'm on my computer, but I'm finding that I can't turn away. So many people who are so young, some of the pictures are graduation photos. Oh man, they just showed a picture of someone kissing a (his?) baby. A friend of mine almost re-enlisted in the Army (as a career decision) just a few months before all this shit went down. I thank God every day that things didn't work out and he didn't do it--I could be looking at his picture.

It looks like Koppel made a point of learning how to pronounce the names before the show; kudos for that.

... but I can as Michael's dad. He's only communicating by e-mail ...no phone calls, no letters. The last message we got from him spoke to the generosity of the DU'ers. He's already getting packages. Some of mine seem to be getting lost in transit (a letter to him was returned to me after having swirled around in the system of military delivery. It was over two months old.

But yes indeed; he's getting packages already from you good people, and he sends his thanks. He seems to want to thank you each personally by e-mail or by return address, so I'll leave it up to him and not be a broker for his gratitude except to say that as his dad I appreciate what you folks are doing. You're very kind.

I've spoken w/ Mari on the phone & emails, & I know it's been extremely difficult for you and her. My heart breaks for all of you. We've got to bring all the troops home now because they did NOT ask for this so-called war. Let those who are profitting from it, go there themselves w/ their family and friends. I pray that Michael's ok, every day I hear something bad and am scared for you and the others. This week, people from our area have been getting killed. Seems they rotate the front lines w/ the different divisions. Heaven forbid. One family has already spoken out to the local media and I'm sure shit's going to fly, which it should, it's WAY overdue! And now w/ the nuts gearing up for the draft, I hope every DU'er takes the time to fill out the online form to get on their local draft board because it takes about a week for the paperwork to come back.

74. I thought Ted's closing was a fair, non-partisan comment...
making it clear he was siding with neither those who are pro-war or anti-war, that the intent was to rise above politics and honor those who had died. There is a real cost to war and those faces shown are the ones paying it.

I'm sure a transcript will appear somewhere on the web, but it was totally apolitical. Ted spoke what he thinks both sides of the war issue could say about the show and then said that it wasn't about either of those positions, and that he is not against "the war," whatever that means.

77. Koppel said the he isn't opposed to the War in Iraq and that we may
he said the he isn't opposed to the War in Iraq and that we may decide it's worth it as part of The War on Terror.

Also that 400,000 Americans were killied in WW II.

83. he did say
'they died for a war that did not have to be fought...'

that's a close enough paraphrase, and i was suprised to hear him say it.

damn Ted K, you shouldn't have dissed on Kucinich so early on. He's called for the end, pull out the troops all along, and we should have, and Dennis was and is still right.

so a year from now, will be there a "The Fallen II" ?

62. You're wrong
He was fair, and that is all we're asking for. Enough with the partisan crap, this is a great debate on our future. Not a good vs evil, a debate.

66. I agree
It was well put. I don't necessarily agree with him, but that's beside the point.

86. Partisanship has nothing to do with it
Those men and women died in the course of an invasion, overthrow and occupation based on WMD (not there), liberating the Iraqi people (we have killed a minimum of ten thousand plus of them), and the global political theory of spreading democracy in the Mideast through military force. THESE ARE FACTS. FACTS ARE NOT PARTISAN.

Any time soldiers and invadees die under these circumstances, you cannot avoid the political repercussions of reading the names and showing the faces of the dead.

I would much rather have heard Ted say, "If you get a political message from this broadcast, that is up to you."

71. Oh, Please speaking ones mind is not chickenshit. . .
. . .than man took a lot of heat for what he did he was even handed. But because he did not use the dead to crucify Bush does not mean he is chickenshit, it means he has class. . .something someone who would call him chickenshit probably knows something about.

64. I could have done without this line
"you may think that I oppose the war. I don't."

Meh. It was still a respectful tribute.

73. i at least admire him for being upfront about it
and qualifying that with "just because there's a war, it doesn't mean it or our leaders should be absent from dissent, criticism, or debate" (paraphrased)

63. I really didn't think this would upset me
But it did. It was both the cumulative effect and the individual faces.

Each of those people "belonged" to someone, was loved by someone. And they will never have them again.

By the end of that it was clear it wasn't about Ted anymore.

I didn't even care what he had to say. So, he did his job, I think.

could be my children

but, that was not to be this time around.

i see beautiful boy after beautiful boy and it just breaks my heart. oh, not that I would ever have a one of them, but I see these boys every day in NYC. on the subway, on the street... you wonder, what's ahead? who will love you? who will you love?

it is too sad. and, for nothing. nothing.

watched about 30 minutes and was tearing up.

82. Commercials?
The commercials are such a jolt --in the middle of a funeral procession? There it is – profits are more important than people.

Probably the advertisers had no opportunity to produce a company spot that said, “blah, blah, blah, to our fallen.” However, advertisers could have certainly contacted ABC and said that they would exchange their commercially produced advertisements for a tastefully worded statement about The Fallen.

BUT NO! Bring out your dead and bring out your dollars. Blech! Ack!

How do you figure deaths read per minute to the commercial ratio?

PUKE.. coughcoughcough...

87. Oh God.
More than 700 people. All gone. Most of whom would be here if it wasn't for Bush.

Is this what God told him to do? To send these poor men and women to die for NO REASON? That's not any God I pray to. I don't believe in Hell, but right now I'm wishing it could be created just for Bush, Cheney, and the rest. It's so fucking disgraceful.

95. Conan O'Brien's take on "Nightline Flap"
Conan O' Brien just did a short bit about it. Their announcer read the names of shows that Sinclair broadcasting felt were appropriate to air. Including:

  • Temptation Island
  • Are You Hot?
  • I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!
  • The Maury Povitch show, including these episodes...
  • ...I slept with 20 men, are you my baby's daddy?
  • ...You slept with 20 men, I'm sure the baby's not mine...
  • etc...
  • ... and finally: Yes, Dear

(from memory, hope I got close...)

98. Koppel's closing made an excellent point . . .
paraphrasing, but he said it wasn't right for a few to sacrifice while the rest of us are seemingly unaffected by the war . . . sounds like his purpose was to spread the responsibility and the pain among all of us, which is where it belongs . . .
