1. And why not, Ted?
You dig spending a billion dollars a week?

You like the ideas of that Iraqi prison being returned to its original use?

Death turns you on?

The word "quagmire" is so much fun to say on the air?

Why in the world aren't you against this ill-considered, wasteful, unnecessary, overpriced, crime against our constitution, international convention and humanity? What kind of a person are you?

4. That's a possibility
I'd like to think that my soul would go for a slightly higher price, but maybe the money and the prestige are more seductive than they look.

ded" describes him very well since way back.

3. I believe his point is that he is a reporter.
He does not take a position on the war. their job is to report the truth, to question, to investigate, but not to take a position.

6. But he did take a position.
Sorry, I just can't fathom why he would be supporting this madness.

His reading of the names was a class act. But I am really disappointed in him in that respect.

8. Perhaps it is reverse psychology
saying one thing and really meaning another. I'm sure he had to cover his ass. It is not the popular thing to buck against this bunch in office you know.

7. I took his final thought
as a statement directly pointed to those dickheads who run Sinclair. They basically called this anti war propaganda. Ted was telling them that they were wrong, and as far as "propaganda", it could go either way.

I just got the feeling he's royally pissed at sinclair and was telling them to go to hell.

Edited on Sat May-01-04 12:09 AM by drfemoe
I didn't hear it yet, so it's hard to make a judgment.
Even though I am anti-war, I wouldn't want to read 500 names of KIAs and then dis the war ...

13. Think of the good it will do that he said that.
If he had an anti-war statement to close the show, then people would write Nightline off as a cheap liberal attempt to turn public opinion against little Napoleon.

Since Koppel said he wasn't against the war and it wasn't about that, it removes that from the table, possibly allowing people to look at the true message Nightline was trying to give.

It may be best to get past this. How and when we went to war, well, those are different things.

17. I didn't hear him say he was for it. He simply negated what some
thought was his intent or what some ADVERTISED was his intent.

He took neither a position for nor against.

18. Coz he is an American?
and he really isn't against the war I suppose...a simple answer is usually best...

Might be the 'war dead' problem is a scam...

Get people who hate Bush to demand that his troops are honored in the Media and in town squares, on web sites because they think Bush is weak on the 'um--Iraq war' and this somehow reflects well on um--democratic voters...

Sorta like last week, when Clark demanded that America should have gotten tough on 'terrorists', and liberals flocked to his message...

19. Well...
look at what is going on these days...we got big corporations advertising on most of these channels and they can pull their dollars away at anytime if they don't like that the commentator is saying...look at how many radio personalities are getting taken off the air when they start talking against BushCo...look at Howard Stern...they say it's because he's obscene...come on...they really didn't start giving him shit until he really started hammering BushCo...

Maybe Ted was just covering his ass because ABC is afraid of losing out on the millions of dollars thrown at them from BushCo's coporate buddies...

who knows...I still like what they did by reading aloud the names of our fallen soldiers...

20. Please, let's not get nitpicky. Ted Koppel has nothing to do with this.
Edited on Sat May-01-04 03:19 AM by VolcanoJen
Yes, yes, I understand the gravity of the war, and I've poured out my heart to the interest and boredom of many DUers.

However, it is my firm belief that Ted Koppel singlehandedly did more to propel the awareness of the reality of the Iraqi War than anyone else in the major media today, and I'm willing to thank him for that. It took some balls... as evidenced by the hyper, un-patriotic Hannity-esque reaction from our right-wing friends.

I just don't feel like parsing Koppel's words right now. It eclipses the message, because Koppel is not the message. Those faces are.
