To hell with corporate controlled media - what about
Edited on Sun May-02-04 10:25 AM by doni_georgia
corporate controlled government???

I was just thinking about what has happened to our democracy. We no longer have a government of the people, by the people and for the people. There are WAY too many corporations out there handing out $ for the people to have any real say. I seldom watch commercial television, because I can't stand the commercials, but this morning I watched Meet the Press and had to put up with the commercials, because my remote was dead. GOD almighty - is this the mindset of Americans these days? Are we nothing more than mindless stepford citizens who are controlled by flashy advertisements? This got me thinking about our government and how it's impossible today to win a major elected office without corporate support. That's why most big corporations donate to both parties (covering their asses at all costs), although, of course they primarily donate to the repugs. Something needs to be done, or this political experiment called America is in serious trouble.

Hell, I already shop at all natural markets, because of my son's severe allergies to food additives, but I'm ready to do more. I'm ready to put my $ and my convenience where my mouth is. Let's share ideas for a campaign against corporate control of our government!

Where do you want to start?

I think corporate media is an important part of the problem, as the media is not a watchdog in this regard (is it in any?)

One point is certainly that in the US, you have to be wealthy to be successful in politics. That even holds for a Congress seat, not only for the President.

In Germany, for example, parties get subsidies to finance their campaigns, so they are not that dependent on wealthy donors. And they get free airtime (limited amount naturally) on TV (that's the reason we can watch all sorts of funny ads in pre-election time, from parties we not even know). Naturally, the media in the US like the current system, because they earn a lot of money with ads the candidates have to pay for. But that system prefers the wealthy candidates with deep pockets.
