Where Is Kerry's "It's the Economy, Stupid"--or any other "stupid"???
Bush is our "See Spot Run" president; and waaaay too many people think the bumbling bumpkin is so precious and are just waiting to vote for him. Clinton was a Rhodes Scholar. Clinton said "it's the economy, stupid".Well, that's an awful "eeegnorant speech-a-fin" remark by an "edukated" person, ain't it?? He won.

I'd like to punch America in the mouth. I watched all the Gore speeches broadcast in 2000 (i.e., C-Span) and I've watched Kerry's. Bullshit that these were "vague" and "gas bag" speeches. They were not. They were very concise and clear about our choices. BUT, the media tells Amureka they are 'vague and gasbag" and thus, these men just don't connect with Amurekans. Absorb this and then you tell me the future of this country: The future of this nation and world depends on someone coming up with a sentence that is no longer than four words!! Solve mankinds problems in four words or less or lose the race.

All over the reports are pouring in that the people are getting real leary of Bush but they don't know Kerry and thus probably will stick with Bush. They spout "flip flop" and "will raise, gasp, your taxes"---wonder where they got those ideas?? They refuse to go beyond the ads and spend five damn minutes to find out what is going on. It's pathetic; but Kerry has to define himself, his view, his fixing all that's wrong and his leadership of the world in four words or less. That's how we vote and don't kid yourself to the contrary. Bush is a smashing success with digs like "Kerry has been around D.C. enough to be on both sides of any issue". This is how the American people absorb info and this is how they vote. Eloguent and intelligent John has to take a page out of the Rhodes Scholar's book and talk the language of "American dumb" to them. Sometimes you wonder if they are worth it.

1. It's sort of ironic
Edited on Sun May-02-04 05:22 PM by lancdem
but if Bush hadn't started the war with Iraq, I think he'd probably be the favorite to win because the economy isn't the liability it was for his father. I'm not sure Kerry will focus on one issue like that, but I imagine he'll come up with a sharper message as we near November.

2. I'd like to punch America in the mouth
Edited on Sun May-02-04 05:27 PM by Marianne
Me too--but you know, if our candidate is reluctant to charge into the water and take the risk, we are NOT to blame.

We are NOT to blame==we do NOT have the money or the exposure--all we have is our votes and our work to get people to vote.

we do NOT have the exposure that a Kerry does

We expect him NOT to squandere that exposure

It is axiomatic:--we must vote for Kerry in order to get rid of Bush.

Kerry must realize where we are coming from.

Has he? Has he been willing to fight for us? and to take up our banner?

So far, he has not recognized us--you know the "us" who are the "fringe" and the base of the
Democratic party.

He has , it seems,. been content to lay back and let
Bush take the lead.

Well, that is fine, but we need more from our leader than that passive aggressive approach.

We NEED a vision

8. sgr-- NOW that's the goddamn catch phrase we need to repeat and
repeat. It got a standing O from Gephardt and it has to be our banner. If it has to be a visionary banner than let it be: It's time to bring intelligence back to the White House" Damn it Kerry, just put it into a sugar cube and run it down the throat of these ignorant assholes. It's so frustrating to save people from drowning or prefer to drown!!!!!!

5. I don't know what motivates folks
who claim that Kerry hasn't taken the fight to Bush. I just can't imagine that they've heard everything that has been said by the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Here's a collection of John Kerry's words so far in this campaign:
_____________________________________________________________________________________

"We shouldn’t be opening firehouses in Baghdad and closing them in Brooklyn."
_______________________________________

“Under this Administration, America’s middle class has been abandoned – its dreams denied.
__________________________________________

“I'd like to know what it is Republicans who didn't serve in Vietnam have against those of us who did.
_________________________________________

“One way or another we're going to have a debate about the future not the past. We’re not going to let them make this about a war 34 years ago, when we need to talk about the war today."
__________________________________________

“For everyone who saw the President yesterday in Daytona when he said to all of America, ‘gentlemen start your engines,’ I say we need a new president who says to the American people lets start our economy and put America back to work."
_____________________________________________

"George Bush is a walking contradiction, a walking barrel of broken promises," Kerry told the morning gathering.

"As the phrase goes," he said, "Houston, we've got a problem."
_____________________________________________

"I think George Bush ought to leave the ranch and come out and talk to people who have lost their jobs," he said, standing in a balloon-festooned plaza in front of a massive Lone Star flag. "I think he ought to leave the ranch and come out and talk to people who don't have any healthcare."

He accused Bush of telling "one of those tall Texas tales"
_____________________________________________

"I believe what he will do tonight is run away from his own record because he doesn't have a record to run on."
_____________________________________________

"Kerry said he's never seen such "crony capitalism and crony government" or such "arrogant, inept, reckless and ideological foreign policy."
___________________________________________

"Coddling big oil, serving up tax giveaways for the wealthiest, and opening up doors for the lobbyists and for the polluters: That's the only mission accomplished by George W. Bush."
____________________________________________

"We’re not only going to send Bush back to Texas, we’re going to stand in front of a sign that says ‘Mission Accomplished.’"
_________________________________________

This is the biggest 'say one thing, do another' administration that I've seen."
__________________________________________

"On issue after issue, George Bush has given America a raw deal, and everyone in this room knows it," he said in the text. "George Bush goes to Baghdad to carry around a fake Thanksgiving turkey while he cuts support for our troops and 40,000 veterans are left on a hospital waiting list."
___________________________________________

"Being flown to an aircraft carrier and saying `mission accomplished' doesn't end a war," Kerry said, drawing laughs and applause. "And the swagger of a president saying, `bring 'em on' will never bring peace."

7. It is obvious that if people are not getting the message
and are not "motivated" that it is the fault of the campaign managers and the candidate and NOT THE PEOPLE

as we know the habits of the voters in America

We do NOT have to research bey0nd what we are capable of to cast a vote.

It is UP TO THE CANDIDATE TO BRING IT TO US

and NOT the other way around

19. You seem complacent enough about the future to wait for Kerry to do it all
Not me. I don't think our Democracy is only Kerry's concern. The right wing doesn't leave it up to Bush sell himself (as if he could).

9. It's the jobs, stupid.
That would be my pick. Of course we all know it's more than that, but that would get the Average Knuckle Dragger's attention. *Everybody* knows what it is to worry about losing your job and not being able to find another one - or to be able to support your family on the pay if all you can find is a low-wage replacement job. From there, you can springboard into losing health care, especially for your kids, which is another big worry for families.

Alternative (depending on how Iraq goes) "it's the body-bags, stupid." Not as effective for the A.K.D corps, IMHO, because many of them are into the macho "kick their butt" mode, but it could be tied into jobs - i.e., lack of opportunity driving YOUR sons and daughters into military.

if you ask me. I wonder if the complainers have ever even been through a political campaign before. Kerry is doing just great too. No one a year ago thought the Democrat had a chance, much less be tied this far from the election. Kerry's big ad buy will help..great news about expanding into Louisiana and Colorado btw, the v.p. announcement and of course the convention is still to go.......and then THE DEBATE(S)

click this link and put a 'little' tiny bit of effort into Kerry's campaign....Kerry will take the White House...

most of the 'whispering' campaign is just a nasty reTHUGlican effort to keep sliming Kerry....it started back in January when lots of the reTHUGlicans got into DU after directions were posted on free republic...

STAND UP now and take back America....

17. You are doing this website no good by labeling discussions about
the Kerry campaign as infiltrating republicans. Unless of course some people wish to drive everyone off and just have a two or three way conversation here. Kerry is waking up and changing. You seem to forget that. It is an evolving campaign and you seem to forget that. Thank god so far his people aren't stuck in the "your doing just great John, don't change a thing" mold. Did you note that in the lead up to Iowa he did many firings until he got it right?? Think what would have happened if he only listened to "your doing great John don't change a thing".

16. What about my post is complaining??
I said I watched Gore and now Kerry's speeches and they are great and decisive BUT the media is saying they are not. Clinton was smart. He just put it into four words. The media will not let Kerry rest unless he can solve the world (and thus get into the minds of Americans) in a simple sentence. He knows it. That's why there have been firings at campaign headquarters---see, things aren't going so swimmingly; but they are understanding the problems and trying to correct them. People are bitching all over the place in polls but when asked "vote for" still a good half say "I'll stick with Bush" even though he sucks. If Kerry can "coin" it, he has the election. He has to outdo the media. Gore should have carried so manys states that Florida was irrelevant but he didn't because the media refused to listen to his speeches and label him "vague". Kerry now has to abondon the speeches so to speak and talk in those sound bite stinging phrases. His people have started to realize it. And we have to keep encouraging them to do so. Kerry can outline his great vision for America in his innaugeration speech.

But I think the people who could be getting on board with that message have their own messages in mind. So, we end up with what we have. Until people (including D.C. Democrats) can put their personal agendas aside and get on board with what the campaign is trying to accomplish, I'm afraid the Republians will always be able to paint the Democrats any way they want to.

First of all, that was more of an internal slogan. It certainly wasn't Clinton's external one. Also, times are quite serious and serious rhetoric is required.

It wasn't a campaign slogan. I remember, Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow, and We Will Go Up Or Down Together, as the prominent slogans coming directly from candidate Clinton.

23. I think the basic problem on this front is......
..... the flux inherent in all of those issues.....

Suppose Kerry picks the jobs issue, and sticks with it. If there's a sudden and enduring upswing in the jobs picture, which is entirely possible just by the nature of economics, then Kerry ends up looking like a whiny chicken-little.....

similarly for a variety of other things that Kerry might try to make *the* issue.....

So I think Kerry's thought is to hold off as long as humanly possible on naming *the* issue, very similar to how he's holding off on naming his veep - the less time the repubs have to react to either decision, the better....

even if one doesn't agree with this strategy (assuming I'm right), it doesn't seem completely knuckleheaded - tho i agree that such a strategy leads to tense moments at this point in the campaign.....
