Bush declares May 1st to be "Loyalty Day"
Now that's a bit too obvious for most facists, but not his eminence.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/04/20040430-15.html

Loyalty Day, 2004 by the President of the United States of America a Proclamation

As Americans, we work to preserve the freedom declared by our Founding Fathers, defended by generations, and granted to every man and woman on Earth by the Almighty. On Loyalty Day, we are reminded that we are citizens with obligations to our country, to each other, and to our great legacy of freedom and democracy.

We learn lessons of loyalty from the selfless dedication and unwavering allegiance of our men and women in uniform. We are grateful for their courage and willingness to sacrifice for our country, and we stand united behind them. Through the "On the Homefront" program, a USA Freedom Corps initiative, many Americans are writing to service members, contributing to the purchase of care packages to be sent overseas, and helping the families of those deployed with basic family needs such as home repairs, financial planning, and child care. By supporting our troops and their families, citizens are making a difference in their communities and showing loyalty to our country through their patriotism.

America's citizens are also demonstrating their loyalty to our Nation through volunteer service. In answering the call to serve something greater than self, Americans reflect the compassion and decency that make our country great. Through the USA Freedom Corps, my Administration is providing information about volunteer opportunities to Americans so they can give back to their communities and help their fellow citizens in need. The hard work and generosity of America's volunteers help build a culture of service and responsible citizenship that strengthens America and sets a positive example for future generations.

Over the past few years, America has once again witnessed the loyalty and character of our citizens. We must continue to ensure that our young people know the great cause of freedom and why it is worth defending. Our Founders believed the study of history and citizenship should be at the core of every American's education. By encouraging students to learn more about American history and values, we can help prepare the next generation of Americans to carry our heritage of freedom into the future. To further this goal, my Administration has created initiatives such as "We the People" and "Our Documents" to help bring the stories and documents central to our history into the modern classroom.

Loyalty Day encourages citizens to demonstrate their commitment to our country by supporting our military, serving each other, and teaching our young people about our history and values. Being an American is a privilege, and our patriotism is a living faith in our country's founding ideals and the promise of the American Dream.

The Congress, by Public Law 85-529, as amended, has designated May 1 of each year as "Loyalty Day," and I ask all Americans to join me in this day of celebration and in reaffirming our allegiance to our Nation.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2004, as Loyalty Day. I call upon all the people of the United States to join in support of this national observance. I also call upon government officials to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings on Loyalty Day.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twenty-eighth.

GEORGE W. BUSH

26. Yes! Yes! It can be be like May Day in the Motherland!
http://www.rediff.com/news/2003/jan/28nad.htm
In recent times the overwhelming image of a massive parade, which lingers in the mind is of the annual May Day parade in Moscow's Red Square. The spectacle of goose-stepping troops, the massive show of flags and the long inter-continental missiles on trailers was designed to impress the West with the Soviet Union's military might and progress. Not many had realised at that time that behind the pomp and spectacle lay a country in economic doldrums due to its massive military spending.

The shrub has absolutely no clue. About anything. But he displays a particularly profound ignorance of history.

40. That last part is interesting
Not many had realised at that time that behind the pomp and spectacle lay a country in economic doldrums due to its massive military spending.

This could very well be said to be the US. Other industrialized economies have no problem using the government to build up the infrastructure. In the US, the military is the only vehicle where there is little problem politically to give money to. You know the national interstate highway system? It was originally called the National Defense Highway System and came out of the National Defense Highway System Act. It was passed politically as being a military expenditure. The Internet was a DoD project - ARPAnet (from the Department of Defense's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). European governments fund Airbus directly, the US funds Boeing military aerospace R&D, which it must then transform into commercial knowhow. This need to raise military spending for things which aren't even military (highways, the Internet, commercial airplanes) has been shown in many economic studies to hurt the US economy relative to the Japanese and European method of direct non-military funding. It puts the US at a competitive disadvantage.

15. Not surprising
Remember this?

Throughout the world, people of all religions recognize Jesus Christ as an example of love, compassion, sacrifice and service. Reaching out to the poor, the suffering and the marginalized, he provided moral leadership that continues to inspire countless men, women and children today.

To honor his life and teachings, Christians of all races and denominations have joined together to designate June 10 as Jesus Day. As part of this celebration of unity, they are taking part in the 10th annual March for Jesus in cities throughout the Lone Star State. The march, which began in Austin in 1991, is now held in nearly 180 countries. Jesus Day challenges people to follow Christ's example by performing good works in their communities and neighborhoods. By nursing the sick, feeding the poor or volunteering in homeless shelters, everyone can play a role in making the world a better place.

I urge all Texans to answer the call to serve those in need. By volunteering their time, energy or resources to helping others, adults and youngsters follow Christ's message of love and service in thought and deed.

Therefore, I, George W. Bush, Governor of Texas, do hereby proclaim June 10, 2000, Jesus Day in Texas and urge the appropriate recognition whereof, in official recognition whereof, I hereby affix my signature this 17th day of April, 2000.

49. GA state employees including teachers have to sign loyalty oath
The State of Georgia requires "all persons who are employed by and on the payroll of and the recipient of wages, per diem, and/or salary of the State of Georgia, or its departments and agencies" to take a loyalty oath. If the person does not sign the oath, the act then instructs that "such persons name be taken from the payroll and such person shall not be permitted to receive any payment from the State." Only way I can teach in Georgia is to sign the damn loyalty oath. I hesitate each year - pisses me off royally, but food and a roof are necessities, so I sign the damn thing.

Edited on Mon May-03-04 08:27 AM by LizW
If the president can declare an American citizen an "unlawful combatant" and have that citizen imprisoned indefinitely without access to lawyers and without any hearing, then yes, he can in fact strip any citizen of citizenship and constitutional rights at any time.

45. Sorry to burst the bubble
but this has been going since 1958 as a national day, with origins in the 1930s (and yes, it was an anti-socialist May Day move).

http://www.theholidayspot.com/mayday/loyalty_day.htm
Though the exact beginning of the date of observance is not known, the concept stemmed in the early 1930s. The bid to celebrate May Day as Loyalty Day came in rather as a counteractive bid. A bid to counteract the May Day Communist exhibitions in the United States. Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars thought that a challenge must be given to what they considered as the 'disruptive forces of the communism'. And they wanted that the loyalty of Americans to the American ideals must be asserted to prevent the growth of communism in America. So, in the early 1930s they began urging the institution of war veterans with organized parades and ceremonies.
...
it took until 1949 to proclaim the observance of Loyalty Day. And this was when forty nine states and territorial governors joined in. Thanks to the efforts of Senator Karl Mundt of North Dakota and Representative James E. Van Zandt of Pennsylvania. In May 1, 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower made it a day of national observance.

In 1932 some patriotic organizations were encouraged by the Loyalty Day concept and wanted to do something more to inspire loyalty to the nation. So, the concept of Americanism Day came into being to be celebrated on the same day of the Loyalty Day. The first Americanism parade was held in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, in 1932. The day has since merged with Loyalty Day.

Even Clinton indulged in it.
