1. Glad to hear it!
Sadly, I think a lot of the turnaround is going to happen because of pressure from the rest of the world.

I'm holding out hope that other countries will now press for deep investigations into the torture charges.

2. The begining of the backlash started way back when
but this has accelerated it.

By the way, we don't have the troops for security duties at those
bases... just one more fact into the dripping towards a draft

3. Why not?
What protection do we provide now that the Cold War has been over for 15 years?

Actually, the presence of US bases in Europe lessens their security - it both provides a convenient target for terrorists and the US presence drags down European self-defense initiatives.

4. Last Year
Rumsfield was threatening Germany it was going to pull out if it did not support Bush. I guess words may come back and bite.

5. Last time I checked, Germany was a major industrialized modern nation,
not entirely dependent on the dollars spent by US soldiers in its bars and brothels for its economy. Heck I would have imagined that the economic benefit of the U.S. bases we had in the Philipines was a lot greater and they still threw us out.

6. Wow! I imagine France feels the same way.
Russia could be the wild card, but it has enough problems in Chechnya without adding more.

No wonder the Pentagon is starting to rely on Saddam's Republican Guard Generals to take up the slack! Muhahahahaha!
