If Jessica Lynch was the poster-gal for Iraq, what does that make this gal

This, like the other pictures, DISGUSTS ME!!!!

I think of all the publicity that Jessica Lynch received when she was POW and then 'rescued'. I'd like to know who this girl is and what possessed her to join in with the other idiots with this inhumane acts. I hope this picture haunts her the rest of her life, following her in every event or milestone that she achieves throughout life. I hope that at her funeral, this picture is posted above her casket so folks will once again be reminded of the inhumane, criminal acts that she did.

Maybe I'm just a little sexist to think that women would never Ever do anything as cruel or inhumane as what this gal did. As a woman myself, I always believed that we women were not capable of such things. Throughout history, it was always overwhelmingly men who committed the most heinous acts, but this gal here has proved that women can also be as heinous.

I hope that she, along with the others, is discharged dishonorably from the military. Nothing will hurt her life more than that black-mark on her records. I hope that she is also tried in the International Courts for the crimes that she committed.

OK, my rant is over, flame me if you think I went too far

(PS - I'm assuming this is a girl - from the other pictures she just looks like one, please correct me if I'm wrong!)

4. Former Honor Student? Did she have her brain removed...
....before joining the army????

Or maybe it was a really crappy school she went to. Then again I went to a really crappy school and I'm smart enough to know not to do crap like what she did

5. I'm disgusted with these enlisted idiots, too
but the snake rots from the head down. We have to be careful not to forget these people were operating in an entire culture of depravity and disregard for human life.

16. It's the officers
who should get punished. A good officer would not allow this sort of crap to happen. A good officer would be informed of whats going on. We're not getting the full picture, however (no pun intended). I'm hazarding a guess that some real higher ups (general officers) were encouraging this sort of thing and it will be a few enlisted pukes who get shafted in the end.

7. don't need to have your brain removed...

As someone pointed out, it's all psychology. With no checks and balances, we would all probably end up re-running Zimbardo's experiments. I'd like to hope it's some extreme reaction to stress, war, friends and comrades being killed, etc., but more likely equal parts "boredom", "because we can", and "these people aren't human and they'd like us to break them down".

8. The Human animal is not a civilized one at all.
Let to it's own devices, and with out the checks and balances, they all have a tendency to devolve to a lower level of behavior.

17. Were Zimbardo's the ones from the 70s that looked at prison stuff?
I saw a bunch about some in psych class several years ago... where people of the same status were assigned either prisoner or guard roles, and over the course of several weeks(?), they took on those roles, to the point of abuse. These were all people who interacted normally at the beginning of the experiment. Power does weird things to people...

18. Yeah, the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment..
http://www.prisonexp.org/

Was supposed to run for two weeks, but was stopped after 10 days because the guards got too sadistic.

In that experiment, all the participants were male. I have always wondered if an all female experiment would yeild similar results. Jusdging from her actions, my answer would be yes.

6. I read something this morning
about her being re-assigned due to becoming pregnant. I've heard nothing else relative to her or her disgusting behavior. She (along with the others involved) had made a complete mockery of what this country stands for. Weren't we supposedly there to free these people from just these sorts of abuses? Makes me sick to my stomach and ashamed. I just wonder if she regrets any of her actions?? One would think not.

9. Unfortunately, it makes her the poster girl for
The Iraqis that are fighting to keep their land free from our imperialism. I think the strongest campaign ad that John Kerry could run would be showing this photo on a black background for 30 seconds followed by the words "Compassionate Conservatism?" or "Are Iraqi's better off today than 4 years ago?"

11. Study the Nazis
People of both sexes will be as inhumane as they are given permission to be. Psych studies in various universities have confirmed this: test subjects (who were told another person was being tested) were to administer shocks every time the fake subject answered a question wrong, and instructed to keep increasing the shocks. They did so, even though the fake subject was feigning a great deal of pain. Few walked out or refused to continue. Both sexes were largely the same.

We don't like to realize this about ourselves, but the truth is that Arendt was correct: evil is banal. Most of it are capable of it, especially when we have authority figures (or the larger culture) telling us it's OK to discriminate, be rude to, or physically damage people outside our own group.

What does this mean? It means we have to be vigilant as whole culture, to find this stuff and call it what it is and make sure the punishment goes up the line instead of staying with the trash who did the deeds. My guess is that they were told to do whatever it took to find the fictitious WMDs. My guess is also that they're being outed not for the torture, but for shopping the pictures of it to the web.

12. This is absolutely correct -- and extremely important.
Edited on Mon May-03-04 11:57 AM by TahitiNut
It is even seen in the quickness with which we're inclined to view those who do it as somehow "subhuman" and "deserving" of extremes of treatment in return. That very same attitude is part of what facilitates the very behavior we pretentiously condemn - indicating our own capacity to behave the same way.

Whenever we rationalize our own behavior reactively, "tit for tating" or "eye for eying," we proclaim ourselves capable of surrendering to the same atrocious concentration camp guard behavior. It is a key to understanding it - and a key most often denied.

22. She's the "victim" of groupthink
Unfortunately, she simply proves the power of peer pressure.

To her fellow soldiers, she was probably one of the "coolest" soldiers around. She was really one of the guys.

I saw groupthink operate when I was in the Navy. Normally reserved sailors could be enticed to actions unthinkable in other circumstances.

It's the mob rule and it's our mob....
