Can someone please show me how to compress a jpeg file?
I took some pictures of my digital camera and the pictures are 800k each. I want to compress them so I can send them via e-mail.

2. there are many programs out there that will do this for you
I've been using a free program called ACDSee for years and I am happy with it. It has a free sponsored version that I am currently using. I suggest you try it :)

3. Compressing jpeg files
Just about any image editing application will allow you to lower the quality of a jpeg. This is the easiest way to reduce the file size. Compressing with something like Winzip won't really help much since a jpeg is fairly compressed to begin with. If you don't have an image editor, something like IrfanView (a free image viewer you can find at shareware sites) works very well.

6. jpegs are quite reduced already imho
Yesterday I had a 370 mb folder of jpeg photos to backup onto a CD. Winzip set at maximum compression was only able to reduce the folder to 309 mb.

7. jpeg is inherently compressed...
You just want to increase the compression to make the file smaller...

In your save dialog look for some sort of slider or something that refers to quality...(compressing slowly degrades image clarity)

Also recomend IrfanView (freeware) - Be sure to use "Resample" not "Resize" when resizing pictures...

9. Reduce the image size and the jpeg quality....
If you just want to e-mail them so someone can look at them (not make prints), reduce the image size so that the maximum width or height is 350 to 500 pixels. Also, you can probably reduce the jpeg quality without compromising the image too much. You have to play around and see how it looks. Of course, you will need some sort of image editing software to make the changes.

10. I never email pictures.
I put them at a safe secret place on the web and ask the person who I want to have those pictures download them from the URL which I send by email.

Saves everybody (including me) a lot of time and effort!!

Once seen I take the picture off my site.
