1. Historically it was used in Scotland

To call a meeting of the clans in times of peril. There must have been a lot of Scots in the pro-slavery movement as they adopted the Scottish Cross for the Confederate battle banner then cross-burning after the war.

As to what it means to today's cross burners, I would guess it means, "we hate you".

You don't have to use it to understand what it means.

3. There was a documentary on the History Channel a few weeks ago
If I remember correctly, they burn a cross to symbolize their love of Jesus burning in their hearts or something like that. It is supposed to be a Christian affirmation of some sort. So why is burning the flag such a problem?

It is used to intimidate anybody in the out-group. Shows that they can get away with something like that without getting caught.

4. It is the Christian way of expressing their Christian Hatreds
Jesus said "Hate thy Neighbor" and Always strike first so you never have to turn a cheek.
