How far we have fallen
I pondered this very question this AM whilst reading various newsfeeds and discussions right here at DU.

And a previous poster indicates with a recent CNN poll just how complacent we have become to human rights abuses.....

The question:

Is torture ever justified during interrogation?

And what is even more worrisome than the question itself, is the results -

44 percent say yes.

This goes beyond anything I had ever thought the US being capable of....I no longer wonder why various groups hate the US with such a passion that they will strap bombs onto themselves and blow themselves up.
Hang onto your seatbelts boys and girls, the world just got a whole lot uglier and a whole lot unfriendlier. I say this with measured tone - if Bush is re elected, the entire world will turn against the US, and we will see a world war unlike any of the others.

1. 'should evidence obtained by torture be made legal in US?'
after 9-11....Ameica began not to be America

...this question of 'evidence from torture okay' was discussed seriously

...'Patriot' Act

...exec order for secret arrests, detentions, trials, verdicts, executions, no appeal

...Ashcroft authorizes recording of prisoner-lawyer consultations

2. I think the signs have been around for some time....
...with the abuses by various law enforcement departments such as New York City and LA, the different military school abuses (i.e. Tail Hook), fraternity and sorority initiations at colleges and even the use of sadistic rights of passage in secret societies like the Skull and Bones. This behavior is widespread and systemic. It is a cancer on our society. It is most un-American.

3. Torture is highly effective
You're guaranteed to extract information. Even if the victim has to make it up or agree to lies. Information extracted with torture has no credibility and can't be justified for any reason other than cruelty and ignorance.

4. as so many other things will attest.......
..... we may be witnessing the end of the great american experiment......

not that i'll stop fighting for it, just that the republicans' 30 year strategy to destroy america is coming on very strong at this point.... americans are ok with torture, don't care about no overtime, acquiese to no SS, willingly pay more for drugs, are ok with halliburton and other big corporations taking all their money, don't care about voter fraud and disenfranchisement.....

lol - all the things that were put in place to protect people are disappearing, and it's because the republicans have successfully convinced the idiotic public to let them go.....

fuck americans are stupid - well played on the republicans' part tho - fucking devil......
