To the editor:
Thank you for publishing Sara S. Golden's letter of Thursday April 29th. It provided a little much needed levity at the end of an arduous workday.
Ms. Golden wants to blame all of the world's ills on President George W. Bush, including, I suspect, Hurricane Isabel, if she thought that she could get away with it.
Still, several of her points require refutation.
First, and foremost, George Bush was properly and legally elected to his current office. On January 6, 2001, the votes of the Electoral College were counted before a joint session of Congress, as provided by Article II, Section 1 of the United States Constitution. George Bush received 271 votes, a majority of the votes cast.
Secondly, regarding Social Security spending; if Ms. Golden is referring to the Medicare Prescription Drug benefit, she should be aware that this is a benefit that a majority of senior citizens demanded. Indeed, the American Association of Retired Persons wants this benefit expanded! If that legislation hadn't passed, you can bet that Ms. Golden and others of her opinion would be writing letters to the editor vilifying Mr. Bush.
Jena and Barbara Bush, the President's daughters are independent women who have attained the age of majority. They are free to join the armed forces, or not join, as they please. By the way, I don't believe any of John Kerry's children have served in the military.
Finally, Ms. Golden, what exactly is a budget surplus, except money that the government has confiscated from hard-working citizens and not spent (or wasted)? Of course, if you would like make a donation to reduce the deficit, both the federal and state governments would be happy to take your money.
For myself, I get down on my knees every evening and thank Almighty God that George Bush was in the White House on September 11, 2001, that he is there today, and Good Lord willing, he'll be there another four years.
Do you really, in your heart, think that Al Gore or John Kerry would be a better president?
