Is Gore going to destroy Newsworld?
Edited on Tue May-04-04 11:12 PM by doubles
Does this mean the end of Newsworld as we know it?

Please say it isn't so.

Newsworld is the only fair and balanced new outlet on Comcast cable.

6. I heard them say on NPR today that...
Gore is saying, "this is NOT a liberal network". Well, what the fuck is it then or is he running away from the word?

8. It's not that hard to start a new cable channel
Getting it carried on cable outlets, well, that's a different story. I understand going with an established network, but not even many of us have the channel in question (I do). It's one of the few sources I have for world news. If he makes it "youth oriented" then I'm afraid we're losing more than we're gaining. It would have been better if they had spent the money on some other station or created another new one from stratch.

(and yes, I know about all the problems involved with doing such actions....not directed to you, Nighten1, just those who think I'm talking out of my ass. I may not have a degree, but the only thing I've paid any attention to before politics was the entertainment industry.)

9. It's not a liberal network
In the same way that FOX is "fair and balanced". Read between the lines, it's easier to get people to listen to you if you don't announce you're biases outright.

Am I missing something? How would Gore destroy it?

ON EDIT: Besides who the fuck wants fair and balanced? I'd rather have mine overtly liberal!

Gore Announces Acquisition of Cable TV Network
By KEN BELSON and MARIA NEWMAN

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Former Vice President Al Gore and a group of investors said today that Vivendi Universal Entertainment had sold them Newsworld International, a cable television network that they plan to transform into a news channel aimed at young viewers.

<snip>

Mr. Gore provided few specifics on the content that will be available on the network, which now reaches 17 million households via Time Warner Cable, DirecTV and other outlets. He said the programming would not carry a heavy political message, but would instead provide an alternative to programs now produced by networks that are run by large corporations.

<snip>

"This is not going to be a liberal network or a Democratic network or a political network," said Mr. Gore, who has said it is unlikely he will seek public office again.

<snip>

Newsworld International is currently a 24-hour cable news channel produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. CBC will continue to produce programming for the new network for a target audience of 18- to 34-year-olds, company officials said.

11. crap!
I like Newsworld. I don't want a channel aimed at the young. I need information from reliable international sources.

14. Where is this News World available?
I don't have Time Warner, but I do have Charter Digital Cable. Most of the time, there's 900 chanels and still nothing I want to watch!

Is this satelite broadcast via the net?

I'm not even sure what to ask for if I would contact Charter and ask then to carry it.

20. Direct TV has it, Comcast has it....
It is a conglomeration of news broadcasts from around the world. We get everything from German (in English) to British to Canadian to Asian news. It is amazing to watch the different take on the news by the international media as opposed to the right wing bull crap we are subject to here.

17. Me, too!
:grr:

When middle-aged people try to devise a "youth-oriented" channel, the danger is that they will come up with something that actual youth think of as pathetic. I remember that well from my own teenage and college years, when adults would try to come up with programs or advertisements that were supposed to appeal to youth and would l just end up being (as we said) "simple." (Translation: "lame")

16. I understand the "reading between the lines" bit
But some of us enjoyed the BBCish high-brow channel that it was/is. I'd rather keep the channel as is and have Gore have another one. Is that hard to understand? This was the closest news some of us had to the real thing. I don't want to see it changed in the slightest.

18. Yeah, why didn't he buy
one of those blasted shopping channels that infest the spectrum instead of destroying the best news source on cable?

What's the contact information for Al Gore?

22. But I think US satellite users may be able to pick up
the domestic CBC Newsworld service, which is definitely not for sale.
(Gore's buying Newsworld International, which is a different service.)

a Canadian source by a very similar name.
