Encouraging: corn growers endorse Kucinich's anti-frankenfoods bills
(Encouraging for us, I mean. But also for Dennis)

The American Corn Growers Association has endorsed several legislative initiatives introduced by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) that address such issues as the area of genetically engineered (GE) foods, crops, and livestock.

"These initiatives will help family farmers and ranchers through these awkward times as new technologies advance quicker than do the laws protecting those farmers and ranchers," said Larry Mitchell, CEO of ACGA. "It will also provide our customers, both domestic and international, the information and confidence they need in order to remain our customers."

1. Good news. Farmers need our support here because

GM crops are a losing proposition for the "small" farmer, benefiting only the agribusiness corporate farm owners. Dennis is doing the right thing, as usual. His concern about GM foods was a major reason for my initial interest in him as a potential candidate before he entered the race. His "Prayer for America" was such a great statement that I had to find out more about him and I was impressed by what I learned.

2. You know, GWB has kept the nation so distracted
with really big, immediate concerns like terrorism, war, and tax cuts bankrupting the country, that many of the other issues slide by without notice. And they are just as important. They aren't as immediately noticeable as the more glamorous issues, but they offer more long term devastation than people understand.

The GMO situation is just such a situation. It's easy to shrug it off when you're not having any trouble finding food at the grocery store. When you stop to realize that, other than backyard "victory gardens," all food sources are on their way to being owned by a very small number of massive corporations...what kind of global control is that? To control the world's food supply?

And that doesn't even begin to address the environmental, ethical, and health issues involved.

Public ed is another such a situation. But, that would be another post!

3. don't be ridiculous...
Family farms aren't where commercial food production occurs anymore. All subsidies to farming end up in the pockets of agribusiness. The biggest flaw liberals have is in their agriculture policy, building an economy on agriculture actually promotes conservatism, laissez-faire policy and opposes progress. Manufacturing and technology is more the key to liberating workers and society. In agriculture workers will always be beholden to landowners but manufacturing and technology can allow a person to be their own boss.
