The CA Latino Vote
Would the Latino vote Line-up behind Davis on the recall question or vote yes-Bustamante solely for the purpose of hoping for an Hispanic Governor?

1. Unfortunately, I am afraid they might vote yes to recall Davis
and then vote for Bustamante or Sanchez. I don't think Schwartzy or Arianna has a chance with this caucus though unless either of them can address them in Spanish.

3. That's why I don't think they have a chance with the Latino vote.
Although Arianna may speak some Spanish being Greek. You know how Europeans pride themselves on being multi-lingual. I don't know for sure though. I doubt Arnold does unless he learned to speak to the nannies.

4. An;ybody Sophisticated Enough to Vote
doesn't need to be addressed in Spanish. The phrase-in-your-own-language thing is a little grace note, an acknowledgement of roots. Shrub actually sounds better in (the few phrases of) Spanish than he does in English.

5. You don't hang around the Latino community much do you?
I know native born Latinos, who have a problem with English because they are closeted in communities where Spanish is spoken and has been handed down from the first immigrant generation and these "abuelitos" usually don't speak any English.

So these Americans, although they know English, are suspicious of Anglos and that they aren't going to care about their issues. However, if the Anglo makes an effort to communicate in Spanish then they feel maybe this guy does care.

Bush has very cynically used this method to get votes in the Latino community. Also, many Latinos think that his bad English is because he doesn't want to talk down to the plain speaking working classes. They are snookered by this.

8. Do They Vote?
But, re: "You don't hang around the Latino community much do you?"

You might be surprised. And the ones I hang around with don't like to be called "Latinos". Not to prolong the suspense, my answer is, they prefer to be called "Mexican-Americans" or "Hispanics." Please let's not get into a NIXON-made-up-the-"Hispanic"-fake-label tiff. I'm already tiffed-out on the temporary-rules front.

6. There's no telling what they'll do
On the one hand, Latinos voted heavily for Davis in 1998. Prop 187, which California Latinos still resent, is seen as a Republican piece of legislation.

On the other hand, Davis has not done a lot for Latino voters since he came to office. The strong support he had is eroding.
