In what instance would you ever vote for a Republican?
Edited on Fri May-07-04 01:49 AM by coloradodem2004
There was a guy who was one of my Assistant Scoutmasters in Boy Scouts. I knew him and respected him for 5 years before that. My dad sold the old house we used to live in and when the new owners had held out on paying him some money they had owed him for years. My dad sued the owners and this man also represented him. He also represented a good friend of mine who got a trumped up traffic ticket from a cop.

In 1996 he ran for D.A. of my county, as a republican. I was 17 and not old enough to vote but if I could have, I would have voted for him because I knew he was fair. He did not win though. The irony is, the Democrat he was running against is now running for congress in the 7th congressional district of Colorado. So the fact that he did not win the race may have been serindipetous.

Don't get me wrong, I am a Democrat, through and through, but party loyalty does not supercede good relationships with people.

2. In most cases I'd agree...

If I knew the candididate personally, and knew them to be a good person, but in this political climate I would never vote for a republican for any national or statewide office. I'd take any democrat* over any repubican any day of the week.

* not including zell miller, then I'd vote against him in the primary or stay home in the general

3. I could never vote for a Republican no matter how good a person
he or she was. The reason for this is because right-wing radicals control the agenda of the party. When sensible and moderate people take the party back then I could consider it.

4. In the 4th house district in Colorado, If I was registered a Republican
I'd vote for a republican in the primaries against Musky Musgrove.

There's a moderate, pro-choice, pro-individual rights candidate running against that running sore.

I'd vote for him if I could (I'd have to change my voter registration, which I won't do) just so we can kill her re-election effort before the general election.

Hell, I'd vote for a West Nile infected mosquito before I'll vote for her.

Pcat.

6. I used to think like you
vote for the person

I am afraid that this administration has created a Kerry Democrat, just like a previous Repub created many FDR Demcrats. I do not think
I could ever vote for a republican again in my life... at the national office. Locally I have no choice as our mayoral candidates are pubbies and I have no choice, never mind the office is suposed to be apolitical (my ass)

7. In my case....
...he was running for D.A, so it was a local office. Of my county and one other. Yeah, I could see what you mean. I think that Bush really drove a wedge in between many of us. It went from being okay to occaisonally cross party lines to support a candidate from the opposing party, either because you liked what they are about or because you knew them and respected them. Now, it has become so hard to imagine doing in almost any circumstance.

8. voting in a three-way Republican primary would be a vote for a runoff...
if there are three Republicans running in the primary, two Congressmen and one underdog...vote for the underdog. This means the two Congressmen will spend the runoff ripping each other to shreds, and to help the Democratic candidate..best to go for the underdog in the runoff.

9. They really have driven a wedge. It is hard not to have a visceral
reaction against any Republican.

I can think of one exception.

He is our representative, for state rep, in Springfield. I have voted for him, and will do so again.

We had a Democrat in that office for one term, in the nineties. I thought she was good, but some people who worked with her did not like her at all. I supported her re-election, and voted for her, but she lost.

I am on our Democratic central committee here, and so I know some Democrats from other nearby counties. The guy who is now the mayor of a large city here told me to give our rep. the benefit of the doubt. He had worked with him in Springfield, and he was very capable. He also worked well across the aisle, seemed to respect Democrats, and cooperated with them. He mentioned some legislation they had worked on together.

Sure enough, we had a large manufacturing plant here that was going to move to Trent Lott's district. Our representative got them to stay, and even got some tax breaks for them, so they expanded their plant. He saved a lot of jobs.

He also knows about IMSA, our state high school for kids who are gifted in math and science. Two of my kids went there, and I support that school. Someone is always trying to get rid of it, or cut its budge dramatically. I have spoken to him about it several times. He likes IMSA, and he supports them.

Okay, this is the only exception. But I do know the guy, and he does a good job.
