This letter isn’t about radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh, who recently said that all drug addicts should be put in the same jail cells as drug pushers. This is about AFN’s decision to continue broadcasting Limbaugh’s show. This show has no place on AFN. It provides no service to our servicemembers. It’s just political propaganda at its worst. The entire show is nothing more than continuous, vicious attacks against one of America’s prominent political parties.

How could the Department of Defense approve this show for AFN? Is the DOD championing one political party over another for its servicemembers? Will unit voting assistance officers start pushing the same political party that AFN pushes with the Limbaugh show? The Defense Media Center, which oversees AFN, claims it’s just giving the public what it wants.

The Limbaugh show may be fine in the U.S., where the public can choose between hundreds of English language news programs. That’s freedom of choice. But for servicemembers in different parts of the world, AFN may be all they get. That makes the Limbaugh show forced political propaganda sanctioned by the DOD.

Here’s an example: A soldier pulls 15 hours of combat duty and maybe gets five hours of sleep. He decides to listen to AFN news. Then he hears someone telling him how stupid he is for belonging to a particular political party. Anyone who’s heard the Limbaugh program can’t deny that this is the type of abuse he inflicts on anyone who doesn’t agree with his political views. At least the so-called left-leaning National Public Radio and right-leaning Fox News provide a wide range of daily new coverage of world events.

The DOD thinks it's all just fine! Rush's defense of the torture as a frat prank and a beer party stunt, went out to the troops in the field yesterday thanks to YOUR tax dollars! I wrote My senators months ago about this and advise you to take the time now to do the same! The DOD is even placing right wing "Political Officers in military units like Adolf Hitler once did! These officers can teach HATE but they can't keep track of little shit like killing , raping and torture!

AFN is the soldier in the field's lifeline home to the "World"! What can we expect when Rush is on there pilled up preaching HATE and saying torture is just fucking DANDY!

It is unbelievable that the DOD puts this kind of "hate radio" show on an official radio network.

I interviwed a sergeant who was home on emergency leave from the 82nd Airborne last October. At that time he hadn't heard of the "Mission Accomplished" stunt or of Bush's "bring 'em on"statement".

He did tell me that his unit had just gotten TVs in their mess hall in Iraq. They were left tuned to Fox news 24 hours a day. That's by design folks.

This ad just blows me away. What are they telling these kids? Not only is torture acceptable it is expected? And oh don't worry about the Code of Military Conduct, that's optional?

This has got to stop.

Someone seems to believe there are no Democratic soldiers - that they are all Republicans. So you lay down on your bunk for a few hours sleep and you hear Limbaugh telling you what a rotten low-life you are if you are a Democrat - making fun of veterans and questioning how they received their medals. It's plain wrong.

Hope they slip it to him! The more people who blast Ted's office the better chance the people in his office will respond in time to bring it up today in public! We have 2 and a half hours to blast it to him! Wish I'd remembered sooner!

in a part of the world where AFN is the lifeline to home....Unfortunately Limbaugh is on at nights here from 7-8pm...That's the bad news and I turn off my radio and listen to a cd or tape then...but from 8-10pm I listen to NPR on the same AFN station...Thank goodness for NPR...I would be a basket case without it....

Conservatives, seeing in black and white, believe that if you aren't supporting them you must be against them. Liberals, seeing in shades, know that there are degrees of bias from left to right, including nuetrality. Since Conservatives see things in thier yes/no black/white mindset, if you don't support them completely, you must be against them, and therefore, LIBERAL. I've heard Republicans claim that Pat Buchanan is a liberal!

The Party of Lincoln, T. Roosevelt, and Eisenhower wouldn't allow any of thier three greatest Presidents to even run now.

Coming from folks like you in the armed forces it will carry much weight! Do not get yourself in trouble though! This is a golden opportunity to slap Rush's caustic jaws bigtime! Even if Ted doesn't get it in time for the hearing today it's a good arguement for later too!

For many in the military, AFN is the only English-speaking network available.

I believe Limbaugh is partially responsible for what happened in the Iraq prisons.

On May 4, Limbaugh equated the Iraq tortures to soldiers "blowing off steam." His exact quote was:

We can expect people to act like decent human beings. I heard the soldier on 60 minutes blaming not being supplied guidelines for treatment of prisoners and a copy of the Geneva convention as the reason for treating other humans like animals.

I listened to AFN in Germany in the early 70s, but I'm not sure if it was out of Frankfurt or another city near by! Back then they had great programming and they entertained without the use of hate Propagandists like they now have! AFN was a great comfort to the homesick GI back then! Armed Forces Network had comedy shows and old time radio style programming, like America loved before TV came along!
