Newsday: They should ALL go

They all should go
It's not just Rumsfeld who's responsible for the misjudgments about Iraq; it's the whole defense and national-security team

May 7, 2004

The long knives are out for Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. In the wake of the news about the abuse and torture of Iraqis detained at a notorious prison outside Baghdad, United States senators and even columnists for The New York Times are calling on President George W. Bush to give his defense secretary the heave-ho.

The reality is that, if Bush is going to clean house, it makes no sense to stop with Rumsfeld. Considering how the Bush administration has made a mess of the situation in Iraq - from the wrong intelligence about weapons of mass destruction to the incredible lack of planning for the post-war situation to the entirely unnecessary alienation of allies - the whole national security team should be fired.

It's just not Rumsfeld and his deputy, Paul Wolfowitz - and his deputy, Douglas Feith - it's also the director of central intelligence, George Tenet, and national security adviser Condoleezza Rice. They were wrong about the reasons for going to war; they were wrong about the danger of a terrorist attack before Sept. 11, 2001; they were wrong about how easy it would be to rebuild post-war Iraq, and they have been wrong about how Iraqis detained and imprisoned should be treated - not to mention denying U.S. citizens held in terrorism investigations their basic constitutional rights.

And we're not even talking here about the No. 1 honcho on every aspect of the war: Vice President Dick Cheney. He can't be fired, of course. But why does he have to be on the Republican ticket come November? Then again, the last president to shake up his government in a dramatic fashion was Jimmy Carter, and look where it got him. Once you take the top people out, there is only one person left to blame.

1. Paul Wolfowitz has to go
He is the architect of the abuse, the prisons, the invasion. He toured Abu Ghraib, he met with Karpinski, he knew full well what was happening, I believe he is the one who made it clear there were no rules.

3. Not only that
but if they bounce just Rummy, Bush'll nominate Wolfie, line of succession, most qualified experience for the job, and all that bullshit.

8. Does he still have to go through confirmation hearings?
It was either Josh Marshall or Atrios yesterday who was talking about the consequences of dumping Rummy at this point. Confirmation hearings for a new SecDef this close to the election would become an all out review of how the wars agains Iraq and Terror have been handled.

No way does shrub want that type of public grilling during election season.

2. Great article.
I am getting giddy because I can just picture KKKarl have a shit fit right about now.

The chimp is literally in a no win situation. From polls and articles, people are not happy with Rum. But he can't get rid of him. All of this "good news" about the economy is going to be shadowed by the Rums testimony today. He is tanking and I bet KKKarl is stressing hard. Millions of dollars spent and the chimp is at an all time low in the polls.

Justice is sweet.

4. I hope you are right, but
This regime has slid by on everything since they took office. They are corrupt and as such seem to glide along. At a recent press conference there was one thing Shrub said that bothers me in particular. Someone asked him about not winning "reelection" and he said "I'm not going to lose." He said it as if he knew the fix was in and there was no way that he could lose. So none of us know what is in the upcoming election. I hate to sound pessimistic, but intuition tells me to be careful. At least he is getting some attention from the press now, but for how long.

6. Same chill that went down my spine when they called Florida for Gore
and the repubs threw a fit because they knew the fix was in. I knew at that moment we were screwed. I won't ever forget that moment in history.

9. Yeah, what a night that was.
I went to sleep without a care in the world, confident that we had just elected a leader and escaped the clutches of the madboy from hell. But I woke up to hell.

10. Newsday KICKS ASS
I'm so proud this is my home paper. They have been hammering away at Bush for months.

And this isn't some rinky dink little rag either, it's one of the top-10 papers in the country in terms of circulation.
