why are we even discussing the pros and cons of torture?
Edited on Sun May-09-04 07:26 AM by mopaul
this new element in our election year platforms, the element of torture of prisoners of war, has taken on similarities to the abortion debate. it seems those who support the use of torture on the godless heathens, tend to be from the same group that claims to be 'right to life'ers. and the liberals who oppose the use of torture on a fundamental level, tend to be pro choice, supporting a woman's right to choose.

so, we remain polarized. bush supporters are making the most bizarre and obscene statements seemingly supporting torture, spinning it, analyizing it, pointing to scientific studies of it, claiming that ANYONE COULD BECOME A TORTURER, under stress, or some other lunatic ravings. alan fucking dirtshawitz is going around explaining dryly that we should follow the israeli model of torture which they've had so much practice and luck with. can someone please shove a matza ball in his ugly face?

now it seems we are dividing into two camps, even here in DU. fragmenting into discussions about torture for christ's sake!

i can envision pro and non-torture rallies coming soon, with the infamous photos becoming protest posters, and the fred felps types demanding an eye for an eye biblical justice.

how in the fuck do the so called followers of jesus christ put these two opposing notions in their heads? i love jesus, but i support torturing heathen aye rabs.

i just want to state that i, crazy as i am, am against all forms of torture, including interrogating prisoners. i can't believe that i even have to fucking say it.

1. Stupid right wing hypocrites
may as well have signs saying, "Who would Jesus torcher?"

I swear, the fact that some can dismiss and excuse torcher, and at the same claim they following the teachings of Jesus, is enough to make my head explode because it makes no sense.

2. the same way they could justify lynchings
The war on terrorism is inherently a racist policy. It's no coincidence, I think, that much of the "torture-supporters" are from the south (side note: I'm also from the south).

Face it:
If you're Arab-looking, male and walking down the streets in Iraq when the Americans rolled into town last year, you could be in prison right now.

According to recent military reports -
-60% of those in Iraqi prisons were probably innocent
- none were taliban or Al Qaeda

4. Torture is stupid and just plain useless
The person who's being tortured only tells you, ultimately, what they think it is you want to hear, regardless of whether its true. Which makes it only an exercise in sadism, nothing more.

But the real outrage is how the RWers are justifying this when their SOLE remaining argument for our attack of Iraq was to liberate the country from the evils of Saddam. And here we are, torturing and humiliating Iraqi civilians in Saddam's own prison. I even read that Pfc. Lynndie England's friends back home said that we should just "nuke the whole country", or something like that. How can they ever make that make sense to them?
