Finally, that whole "Iraq Abuse" story is over.
Another day, another news cycle. What goes up, etc etc etc.

As far as your typical 'See What Bush Has Wrought' story, this rolling news item on Iraqi POW abuse had a good run. Made the front page overseas, vows of investigations, senior officials in front of cameras...

All fairly good for what it was worth. No resignations OF COURSE, but we should never expect that much. That would require Democrats to hate as much as Republicans do, and that simply isn't possible. (Do YOU see any Dem's chanting 'Get out of Kerry's House' over at the WH? You never will. We don't i peach, we get indignant)

But that's all over now. All's back to usual, with the TERROR TERROR WAR ON TERROR PRESIDENT KILLED IN GROZNY BLAST EVIL MUSLIMS OSAMA SADDAM TERROR WAR ON TERROR STAY THE COURSE SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ATTACK THE PRESIDENT YOU AID TERRORISTS VOTE BUSH ONLY A WAR PRESIDENT CAN SAVE US!!!!!!!!!11111!!!

We had a good run with the Iraqi Abuse story. We got pretty much all that we could. We got to lecture, prominent Bush officials went all meek and stuff... we even got an apology from the big guy! Yeah, we did alright.

But it's over now. Time to move on. The media has, and they're the only ones that matter. Stop living in the past. Mistakes were made, work for the future, blah blah blah...

... oh yeah. Almost forgot. TERROR TERROR WAR ON TERROR THEY'RE COMING YEAH COMING FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY NO-ONE IS SAFE OSAMA'S RIGHT OUTSIDE YOUR DOOR TERROR TERROR VOTE BUSH!

1. Yeah, but I cannot believe that the story really is over.
It certainly isn't over on this side of the Atlantic.

both repug Graham and Levin said that movies, pictures, etc. etc. should be made PUBLIC to show that we are dealing with them.
So I don't think this is over by a long shot.

4. Wrong
In the next couple of days, we will see a new battery of photographs and videotapes. These photos and videos, also from the Abu Ghraib prison, are reported to show U.S. soldiers having gang sex with an Iraqi woman, U.S. soldiers beating an Iraqi man nearly to death, U.S. troops posing, smirks affixed, with decomposing Iraqi bodies, and Iraqi troops under U.S. command raping young boys.

Reports are surfacing now of similar treatment at another U.S. detention center in Iraq called Camp Bucca. According to these reports, Iraqi prisoners in Camp Bucca were beaten, humiliated, hogtied, and had scorpions placed on their naked bodies.

It is just beginning. Don't take "Sunday broadcasting" to heart.

12. Will, I really don't think I'm up for much more. Are you?
There has to be a way to stop this. Isn't there? Where are our "righteous" wingnuts? (Sorry, didn't mean to call them wingnuts). Where is their right, right now?

I mean it was all about a blue dress, right? Is the prison in Iraq just a little more important, a little more depraved? I don't know, just asking!? Personally, I find this far more disturbing.

15. rape is not sex
why is it that the assaults on boys are characterized as rape and the assaults on women are characterized as sex?

17. Thank you
This has been bugging the hell out of me too. As if somehow raping men or boys is worse than raping women or girls. Argh.

19. it is a matter of consent
sex is a consensual act, rape is an act of violence.

Its hard to believe that there are still people that do not understand the difference.

6. I guess we'll get to see just how good
Rove's containment machine is.

I think a lot hangs on whether the next wave of pix & vids is released. They're obviously trying to contain them. OIf the pix come out, expect another wave of press interest. If not, not.

I bet the pix/vids come out--leaked by someone if nothing else. There have to be lots of copies around--that's the miracle of digital media.

Remember how pissed the generals are--and the military HAS to have copies.

until WE say it is.

I'm tired of the role of passivity and acceptance - we are in control now. Look what Josh Marshall did for the Lott case. Lott ssaid it was over, Josh said it wasn't and it wasn't. He's 'gone' from his post.

These guys think they can set the agenda, but in fact, the people have begun to rise up and let their opinions be known. We are not pleased and this makes 'water-cooler' conversation a whole new instrument of persuasion.

11. This story has only just begun
Pictures of sexual abuse are on the way. My buddies in the military say one female was raped to death.

It isn't over.

Was My Lai ever over?

13. I suspect that a faction of very senior military officers is going to...
...keep this alive for quite some time. They are pissed that the NeoCons have almost completely destroyed their all-volunteer Army, and they're not going to rest until changes are made. What those changes will be is anyone's guess at this point in time.

14. Welcome, but no, it's not over, and no, Democrats aren't being passive
The assassination of the Chechen president deserves to be a top story.

But the torture story is not over. Rangel is still drafting impeachment articles, as far as I know. The Democrats are still telling Rumsfield to resign. Kerry has escalated the debate, saying he blamed Bush, and not just Rumsfield. And most importantly, most people are hearing him. Bush's approval is plummeting, and people are starting to agree that this war has moved from being a quagmire, to being a mistake.

And that's only the first round. The second round is about to begin, and if the reports from the Red Cross and foreign press are accurate, this round will reveal rapes and murders of prisoners. Once it sinks in to Americans that many of these prisoners weren't terrorists or insurgents, that many of them were simply rounded up for being on the streets after curfew, or because a neighbor had a grudge and turned them in, it wil ALL come apart.

Make no mistake-- more than Rumsfield's job is at stake. There are reports now, aired on Yahoo through the AP no less, that our government had warnings in October of last year, from groups like the Red Cross, that atrocities and war crimes were happening. Bush's plausible deniability is eroding, and even if it held, people are going to ask why he didn't know. This story has now developed a life of its own, and even the pro-Bush media won't be able to ignore it.

If there are deaths, and rapes, in this next round of photos, Bush is a lame duck. He won't recover from that outrage. His own party may vote to censure him. It's a bit late in the season for impeachment, but it could still happen, with enough outrage.

And look at the big picture. Bush has been slammed all this year on Iraq. His excuses for the war have all been proven false, he's been accused of plotting the invasion since before 9-11, and most people believe that. Politicians and generals both are saying we can't win this war, and no one even knows what winning means. And now, in all of this, the one last final shred of an excuse Bush had for invading-- that we were removing an abusive tyrant-- has just been turned into an irony.

Bush is losing, big time. He may have lost, no matter what the economy does.

18. If the pictures hadn't come out we would never have known
about any of this - Rumsfield was so unbelievable on Friday - I love the committee member (Hillary?) who said it's not about the pictures, it's the fact that it's happening!!!!! Someone just called into CSPAN and pointed out that Rumsfield was pissed at the media for letting the pictures out and that seemed to be his issue - what a mentally deranged nightmare. However, I have been so appalled at the American public's lack of response to ANYTHING this administration does, I honestly will be surprised/shocked if the maasses get upset no matter what's shown - they'll continue taking up for these thugs and for the life of me, from a psychological basis, I don't know why. That's my big question - WHY????????????????????? So here are two questions:
1. Why haven't people been outraged about events in the past 3 1/2 years (other than 911)
2. Will people be outraged after viewing even the most disgusting pictures/videos? and if so, will they blame the administration (obviously, Rove and company are already in secret meeting on how to blame Clinton!!!)

but it ain't over. The military is PISSED. More is coming our way, and the so-called *liberal* press is finally growing some cojones.

Ain't no way for Rove to spin this one.

21. Only a handful of "bad apples".
So far, the neo-cons have been using this defense, and this "handful of bad apples" has been accepted by the majority of the sheeple.

I believe that this behavior is systemic and widespread, and believe that the next installment of photographic proof will support the systemic position.

I remember stories and reports of torture and murder of POWs in Afghanistan including the baking of over 20000 prisoners locked inside sealed containers and left in the desert to die. According to reports, this was done under the observation and supervision of Military Intelligence. Hopefully, publicity and a wider investigation will help these reports to surface in the mainstream. If the administration, with the help of the Vichy Dems, is allowed to limit exposure to the bad apples , then it is over.

I wish I had more faith in the Democratic Party, but they always seem to close ranks with the repubs whenever their system (status quo) is threatened.
