When is the rest of the world going to place sanctions on the US?
I don't get why the rest of the world is letting us get away with all of our nonsense. Since before 9/11 we have trashed every treaty and done everything we can to set economic and environmental and political progress back.

I don't want embargos, they would no doubt only hurt the poorest in this country, but I just don't understand why the rest of the world doesn't put its collective foot down.

It must be hard to sanction with one hand and accept US funds with the other. Especially since Bush decided that only countries who "go along" with US policies will be receiving aid and other money. Or maybe, like a lot of US citizens, they are still in a state of shock and disbelief over Bush's atrocities.

2. Been wondering that myself
If the world decided not to trade with US or US companies, all the corporations who went to the trouble to outsource production and service would have the junta out of DC in a heartbeat.

Only thing I can figure is the rest of the world is convinced the junta would use all the resources of the US arsenal. It would follow the neocon history of projection. Remember when Saddam was such a threat because he was an evil madman with WMD? That was projection. The evil madmen are in DC and the whole world is watching.

10. with continued outsourcing of American jobs
they would be wise to develop new markets anyway. Can't buy much on minimum wage and that seems to be where US workers are heading

3. When does the rest of the world ever show any leadership?
Look at how long thing went on in Kosovo before Bill Clinton decided to act. There really haven't been to many instances where the rest of the world has banned together and taken meaningful action without us leading the way.

6. Sanctions are not needed. The rest of the world just needs to say
Could we have our money back please?

7. It would cause too much havoc
As much as the Bush team has wrecked the economy, the US is still the world's biggest consumer and importer, by far... while we're not the engine that drives the world's economy any more, we still contribute significantly... as much as China has become the world's manufacturer, they still rely on selling many of their goods to America and their yuan currency is tied to the dollar. They and Japan hold billions of dollars of US treasury bills as well - so, if the dollar went into the tank, both of those countries would lose as well, and I don't think the world can take 3 of the 5 biggest economies going in the tank.

8. This is the thing that engages me about Blair
How often have the right wing loons in the WH invoked our saintly Prime Minister to provide a veneer of "international" legitimacy to his mad ME adventure?

Why oh why does an ostensibly European "left-winger" provide any kind of support for this Administration is beyond me. Having said this, I find it highly amusing when members of Blairs cabinet are wheeled onto news shows to support his ME policy when it's patently obvious they do no such thing.

You're right - we should invoke sanctions on the US. Trouble is the exchange rate is so good, I'm in NYC on business next week and need to stock up on a few things. I'm ashamed of myself!!!

9. I understand your point....but
the rest of the world is already kicking our ass in a number of key areas, and will continue to do so until foreign interests thrive.

The EU is going to do fine. They have no interest in emulating our capitalism gone haywire. Their transportation, energy, and health care will eventually exceed ours in every measurable way.

China is going to kick our ass in manufacturing and be the next world economic powewr as they perfect more and more of our technologies. Don't get me wrong, I've done everything to make the family aware of Walmart and cheap chinese products. But just the other day I was examining a chinese built bike one of my son's friends brought over. It had some nice craftsmanship to it...not total junk. Give China another 10 years, they'll have us eating out of their hands.

Technologically, other countries are educating their youth and they are going to college, whereas our youth are falling back. Why should the power base in this country care as long as they can hire whoever they want or take business overseas?

The story goes on and on. With the American dream erroding and the mega wealthy in control, it's just a matter of time before other foreign interests come in a take over. What will be left of all the capitalism gone bad will be about 5 Million mega wealthy people that will simply keep their fortunes going for a number of generations. They will be the last remnants of our great capitalistic dream.
