1. Yes and shamelessly, shamelessly so.
I could NOT believe my ears this morning. Dusting that poor Black boy off the shelf to distract people.

50 years! 50 years since it happened & only this week have they decided to do something about it?

REEEEEKS!

I'm pretty sure Emmett Till would tell them to kiss his ass.

Maybe in 150 years they'll drag out the Abu Ghaibr scandal for a fair trial

2. Christopher Benson was on Booknotes a while back
He wrote a new book, well, he ghost wrote it before Emmitt's mother died.

Very sad.

Hideous.

On an aside -- the man who was dragged to his death, was his name Byrd?

* was Governor at the time. Byrd's pregnant daughter flew from Hawaii to meet with * about the crime, and * refused to meet with her.

9. Yes! Just read your post
(Sorry, went straight to Kahuna's via "My Posts")

I'll look for the book on Emmett Till (Emmitt or Emmett?) Hideous. These people are totally obscene. Obscene and shameless.

4. you know, they are NOT fooling anyone
Bush went three years into his term telling blacks to kiss his ass. He has yet to attend the NAACP Annual Conference tho he was repeatedly been invited. He blows off the CBC every chance he gets.

Hell - He came into office by disenfrachising blacks, by denying them the right to vote.

Now all of a sudden he's interested in civil rights?

Yeah, right.

5. This will likely cost him the few black votes he was going to get..
I have heard a lot of black men say they favor the invasion of Iraq. I have to remind them that the occupation of Iraq is the same mentality that enslaved Africans. Then they're like.... Oh yeah. Duh.

8. Those men no no shame.

Mr anti-woman, racist, confederate-loving Ashcroft is reopening this?

I hope the NAACP and Emmett Till's family smack them down COLD and tell them to worry about more recent events instead.

These reptiles didn't give a flying hoot about James Byrd when he was dragged to his death in Texas, they're not going to pretend they give a hoot about poor Emmett Till.

I hope Bush isn't counting on Black votes because they're not going to be there. This bone ain't gonna work.

Poor Emmett Till. Can't rest from those racists even in death!

13. That is how they plan to court tbe Black Vote
IIRC, the Till torture/murder was a pivotal event in the civil rights movement. Is this a start? I wonder if they are going to go next after the Birmingham AL government for the bus segregation, and who knows what else. A grand scheme to undo all the civil rights travesties in the US while they screw up the folks in Iraq and Afghanistan? Ai yi yi!

6. Bizarro World on steroids
These people are absolutely insane. I'm still trying to shake off the shock of knowing people actually thought going to war over "mass graves" created over a decade ago was valid jusitification when said war was already fought once.

But alas, the sheeple who so willingly jumped into their wayback machines to support invading Iraq will surely not question this 50-year investigation.

Anybody with a brain cell has to be fearful of holding onto their own sanity in these times. I am.

Back to the future.

7. It's been 50 years and both the principal criminals are dead
It serves no purpose except to pump up their embarrassing record on civil rights.

11. Hey, Emmett's mom spent the rest of her life fighting for him
She was one hell of an advocate and because of her, we're discussing the matter in 2004.

I truly hope some asshole is finally brought to justice.

That said, this action is just a Bush Justice Dept sham, trying to look like they care about civil rights, talking the talk, but totally avoiding the bigger picture..

12. Absofrigginlutely, those sorry Sacks O S*** !
I just finished reading Mrs. Till's autobiography a few months ago. Yes, this story was horrifying and appalling. But I am shocked but not surprised the WH is opening up this after most of the major players are deceased. Talk about moot points. I only hope the Till family sees it for what it is compared to what it ought to be.

14. Instead of investigating crimes from 50 years ago...how about....
...investigating crimes that are happening NOW! I sure wish the international community and the ICC (World Court) would try Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld et al in absentia for War Crimes...

They are shameless....

15. diversion, evade and put other matters on the back burner
it's become pretty clear that bush* inc. plan on downplaying the more controversial issues

The Till murder will be spotlighted and spun as to bush*'s concern for human rights. The Till murder occured 50 years ago, and it's doubtful that there are any bush-machine connections to it -- therefore it's a safe issue on which to express 'compassionate conservatism'

the question is NOT should the TILL case be re-opened -- the questions are WHY RE-OPEN IT NOW and WHAT DOES bush* GAIN BY DOING IT NOW?
