another perspective on torture
This might not sit well with most of you but the fact is that the torture pics depicts a fact which most americans refuse to acknowledge - we are no better or worse than anyone else. As vietnam so clearly demonstrates, put someone in a dangerous and violent situation and watch the beast in him appear.
For far too long americans have embraced a principle of superiority and an arrogant disregard for the rest of the world. Whats good for america is good for all.
Our own history is quite disgraceful. The wealth of most familes running the country is based on a past of war profiteering (bush) bootlegging (kennedy)banditry in order to seize and frighten competitors (rockefeller and oil) etc...
We killed off most of the indians and hawaiians, started an illegal and phony war with spain over the phillipines (and used that pretext to take over cuba which we then converted into a brothels so we could go "play" there)
Many countries had legitimate govts overthrown and replaced with cia blessed thugs who then proceeded to murders their own citizens with great relish.
Therefore in a morbid sort of way, the torture pics should make us finally realize that our ignorance of the world helped propitiate and condone this type of behavior (they deserve it etc...) and should serve to wake us up and to realize that our excrement smells as bad as any others.
These pics answer a question which most of the ignoramus population ask - why do "they" hate us?
These facts should answer that quite satisfactorly

2. Sadly true, unfortunetly we will not be able to change it...
overnight. We are not the greatest evil in the world, we are a nation that happens to have the greatest reach. And as nations do, elements in our government try to do what they think is best for the nation, or its businesses, and don't care about the consequences. 9/11 is an example of that, the mentality started in 1953, and through the '80's and the CIA helped fund the very people who struck us that day. Its called 'Blowback' and we have payed a dear price for our complacency. Our government and nation our too powerful in the world, for power corrupts, and it is obvious that we are the most powerful nation on the planet, draw your own conclusions.
