Kathleen Parker blames Farrelly Brothers for Abu Ghraib ... no, really!
<font color="blue"]How freakin' ridiculous is this? When the left accuses Rummy of being asleep at the wheel, this is a matter of "personal responsibility." But when some dried up prune wants to score points in the culture wars, it's the media's fault?

WHEN President Bush told the world that abuses at Abu Ghraib prison do not reflect American values, he was right. The best American values, in spirit if not always in practice, respect human life, dignity and the rule of law. But some of what happened at Abu Ghraib, specifically the sexualized humiliations, may reflect American culture, especially in the instance of the naked human pyramid, which is nearly iconographic within the adolescent Zeitgeist that spawned our current generation of soldiers.

The images from Abu Ghraib, now irreversibly tattooed on the Arab brain, were every frat-house cliche magnified. The human pyramid, males mooning, masturbation, bags over heads. What we saw, at least in part, was “The Farrelly Brothers Do Baghdad.”

<snip>

The Farrelly Brothers — kings of the gross-out comedy film genre characterized by scatological humor and raunchy sex jokes — are convenient touchstones in the larger discussion about the debasing of American culture. In their side-splitter for the developmentally arrested, “There’s Something About Mary,” the male star gets his genitals stuck in a zipper. Later when he pleasures himself, he misplaces his “issue,” which subsequently becomes hair gel for “Mary.” Don’t ask. Such is what has passed for culture for many of the kids now populating our military.

My point: There’s not much difference between what those soldiers enacted in Abu Ghraib for digital cameras and 15 seconds of instafame back home and what America’s increasingly debased culture embraces as good harmless fun.

1. Pardon...
...but there's a distinct difference between a comedy about a mans misfortunes trying to woo the girl he's always had a crush on and TORTURING AND KILLING PEOPLE WRONGLY IMPRISONED. A rocket scientist this woman isn't. I hope a really big bird mistakes her for a Honda Civic sometime real soon and shits all over her.

15. "America's Soccer Mom"
Yeah, that's the first thing I thought of when I first read her column. Perhaps she should stick with minivan tips.

Everytime I see this annoying mug on the opinion page of the paper:

I just want to vomit.

7. They run her awful column in my local paper
Edited on Tue May-11-04 07:47 AM by RatTerrier
I saw it last week, and thought it was beyond terrible. Even worse than her usual GOP suck-ups.

So... Are the Farrelly brothers to blame for My Lai? Other atrocities from past wars? Come on!

Today's popular culture is not to blame. And the current 'kill all Muslims' and 'Iraqis are not human' environment seems more to blame. I doubt these soldiers would be committing these acts if they were back home.

Kathleen Parker is a hack. How she got a job, I have no idea. Granted, there is a shortage of decent conservative writers (save for maybe William Buckley, Cal Thomas and P.J. O'Rourke maybe) but was her employer really that hard up for a conservative voice?

She needs to stop drinking the Kool Aid.

9. Cal Thomas decent?
I guess since I haven't read him over the past decade or so, he's improved? I used to think of him as part of the Radical Right.

I much prefer George Will, even before his current anti-Bush/Iraq stance. Will at least doesn't buy into the creation science crap out there.

His column is not that bad. He doesn't seem to be a suck-up.

Never got into George Will. Maybe it's the bowtie.

21. George Will, IMHO,
Edited on Tue May-11-04 08:39 AM by IMModerate
has shown that he has some journalistic responsibility. I don't usually agree with him, but he particularly impressed me one time. He was on a panel, interviewing I forget who, and there was no liberal voice among the questioners. He assumed the part, and I swear the questions he asked could have come from a Joe Conason, or a Robert Scheer. I was very impressed with his professionalism, at least that one time.

I think Cal Thomas is a moron. And watch out, he might sing.

11. Wasn't she and Rush Limburger involved a wild
sex and drug orgy that included Rush's housekeeper and Kat's soccer coach?

As President Bush put it, they are an exceptional "few bad apples"
whose actions "do not reflect the nature of our country."

16. Kathleen Parker is a "kinder, gentler" Ann Coulter.
Her column appears weekly in the Chicago Tribune. She regularly spouts all sorts of nonsense ignoring the situation at hand. Like this one.

But a right wing nut case is a right wing nut case, no matter how you package it. :-)

18. I find it rare that she ever actually makes a point
The Richmond Times-Dispatch (Times-Disgrace it is called around here) publishes her "columns" and I have never been able to understand why. I understand if there is a point to be made but Parker seems only to remind readers that she is married and has children other than that I have never seen that she has anything to say. I think she has to goods on someone in the newspaper biz and they pay her to write nonesense to keep her quiet.
