Perhaps if the 50-cent gasoline tax proposed by Kerry had gone into
effect, we wouldn't be facing these high gasoline prices where the increased costs are going straight into the pockets of the oil executives and company instead of into the public coffers. I believe that had the 50-cent gasoling tax been approved when John Andersen proposed it in the 80's campaign, the might have been used to decrease our waste of energy in this country either through improved fuels or improved milage for autos. Just think of the research that could have been conducted and produced some really great benefits.

3. I am positive that a tax was imposed in the 80's on gas. I remember
gas prices were so cheap, they could not resist adding the tax. I was really pissed off because I knew that when gas prices climbed, the tax would still be there. I think its somewhere in the region of 30 cents a gallon.

4. But it was NOT the 50-cent surcharge that Andersen proposed
to be used strictly for energy research. Reagan shot that down during the campaign. He also shot down Carter when he tried to tell Americans that they needed to conserve and sacrifice. Reangan's position was that Americans should not be asked to 'sacrifice' for anything.

5. Also, don't confuse state taxes on gasoline with Fedral taxes.
Some states have huge gasoline taxes because they have to make up the revenues that the Federal government has cut from them. Highway tolls are another form of state taxes that have more than doubled over the past three years since Bush has been in office.
