Why is no one talking about WHO forged the Niger documents
Edited on Sun Jul-06-03 11:38 PM by SilasSoule
All the talk appears to be emphasizing on the fact that they were used after being informed that they were fake, or have I missed something. I recall speculation from some DU'ers that it must be a BFEE operative in Italy or some Poppy connection, but shouldn't someone responsiible at the Federal level be asking "Who would forge fake documents that were presented as real to U.S. intelligence sources knowing that such documents would be used to justify a war."

Please fill me in if I have missed somthing (like if a congressman or media person) has asked this IMO very valid question.

3. Someone produced the document to the Italian Secret Service
who then shared it with the CIA (apparently).

The forged document most likely isn't CIA work--too shoddy. Signatures didn't match people who were actually working in Niger at the time.

The scandal is not the document itself but that it was given credence. Tenet is going to have to stand up sooner or later and pin the blame squarely where it belongs:

4. I don't have any idea where to find it now
but there was an article on this either here or in LBN some time ago that laid the blame on someone at the Nigerian embassy in Italy, who concocted the document for money (which the Italians paid).

6. I think Congress just assumes it was a contrivance of CIA....
Perhaps a CIA operative in Italy? But it's an excellent question that deserves to be asked.
