Cicadas: the new sharks?
Remember a couple of summers ago when the news was All Shark Attack, All the Time?

Now it's the cicadas. Every night, particularly on CBS (the Cicada Broadcasting System?), it's "The cicadas are coming... they're here... there's trillions of them... they disrupted an outdoor wedding in Cincinnati!!!"

Oh, the horror </sarcasm> -- but I do hope they do not reach Provincetown by Monday :-) (or at all; Cicada Central tells us repeatedly that areas from Illinois to New York and south to Georgia are under the gun, which should leave Mass. in the clear).

"Once again, cicadas have disrupted an outdoor wedding in Cincinnati, and postponed the crucial Third Street Little League matchup between the Cardinals and Tigers; in other news, U.S. troops violated the Geneva Convention by torturing Iraqi prisoners. Good night."

3. Every 17 years
Cicadas are dormant for 17 years, then they come up from their underground nests(?) to keep patriotic Americans awake all summer with their chirping. Then they go away and do it all over again 17 years later.

Kinda reminds me of weather reports in the winter: Special Report--it's snowing! Let's go to our on-the-spot reporter...
