So, what part of corporate America are you boycotting?
For me, it is the fast food industry, for the following reasons:
1. The "food" may be fast, but it's hardly nutritious.
2. The "jobs" they provide are little more than slavery. Low pay, no benefits, while the corporate bigwigs rake in the $$$$$$$.
3. All the disposable cups, lids, straws, plastic bags, wrappings etc. are a burden on our over-polluted environment.
4. Mad cow disease.
I just cannot bring myself to support this way of life anymore. A pox on all of them!

5. Wal-Mart
for a number of reasons:

1. Labor practices
2. Labor practices
3. Labor practices

Oh, did I mention their labor practices?

It is hard for a single parent with kids to forswear fast food. It would not be a realistic undertaking. But I applaud YOUR efforts, and I will feel even guiltier the next time I pull up to the drive-thru.

I didn't mean that to sound sarcastic; I find it increasingly difficult to live authentically. If I boycotted everything that ought to be boycotted, I'd probably never leave the house, and then there's the problem of my house itself, with its dependence on fossil fuels. There are no authentic corners to hide in.

16. That's bizzare
Especially with the bi-partisan nature of corporate influence in American politics. If I were a corporation who wanted some laws altered in my favor, wouldn't I go to the party in power first?

10. Beef, Taco Bell, WalMart, Abercrombie & Fitch
Those are the easy ones.

The hard ones are Starbucks (cause I looooove coffee and they're everywhere), and clothing made in offshore sweatshops (cause the labeling is often misleading and it's hard to tell).

21. Not to be facetious, but...
how do you live?

Do you grow your own food, shop in small neighborhood markets? Do you make your own clothing? Do you not buy shampoo? Do you drive?

I really want to know, because I wonder how I could live if I boycotted all those things.

--There are environmentally friendly, non-hostile beauty products companies like Aveda and The Body Shop
--Costco treats its employees well; certainly better than Wal-Mart.

On the other hand...

--Japanese car manufacturer Mitsubishi is actually a mega-corp with paper mills and de-forestation operations in Indonesia. What then? Honda? Are they OK?
--PBS is utterly beholden to corporate intrests too. That leaves Pacifica.

Please don't get me wrong; I'm not passing judgment on you or your lifestyle. I just think the tangle of choices is overwhelming, and you just do your best, that's all.

31. It's okay, I do get your point and I'll tell ya:
Edited on Fri May-14-04 04:30 PM by catzies
1) I rarely ever buy new clothes. Mostly thrift shops for me. I hate malls and the clothes they sell there.

2) For food I rely on my Saturday morning farmer's market and Trader Joe's. I even now get my shampoo, skin lotion, paper towels, & laundry detergent from Trader Joe's too.

3) By the "beauty industry," I meant I stay away from the big-name cosmetics counters with all the big names you hear about: Estee Lauder, Chanel, etc. etc. I think I do have a $4 Maybelline mascara though. ;)

4) I drive a 7 year old, paid-for Honda, and I fill it with Cotsco gas and my round-trip commute is less than 20 miles a day and in Southern California that's not easy.

Yes, the tangle is overwhelming, and fortunately my vanity is low (but self-esteem is high). Also, I had only one kid, raised her by myself without a lot of frills, and I'm now an empty-nester. I tolerated her and her brand-name obsession (what teenager doesn't have that?) but now she spends her own money on all that crap so I let her.

ON EDIT: I forgot the soda companies. I never ever ever drink sodas so I forgot to add Cocal-Cola & Pepsi to that list above.

18. Walmart, Home Depot, Nike, Gap, McDonalds, beef, most fast food
I've been off beef for about six months now (because of Mad Cow and our govt's refusal to be honest about it and take reasonable measures against it.)

Been staying away from fast food too after reading Fast Food Nation last year. It just doesn't really even tempt me anymore. I just keep thinking about all the chemicals.....ick!!

19. Nike and WalMart
A pair of shoes cost just a couple bucks to make. Why do they cost one hundred dollars each? So athletes don't go hungry, and Phil Knight (Nike creator) can fatten his wallets. Oh, but he employs so many low income Chinese, good for him. Only one thing defines income levels, and that's wages. Thanks Phil, poverty is awesome.

Walmart. They eliminate 1.5 jobs for every one they create. Low pay, high healthcare premiums...only 38% of Walmart employees opt for the healthcare, it's so bad. Walmart supervisors have been known to encourage employees to take full advantage of public welfare, WIC and foodstamp benefits to supplement their pay. Low prices my ass, we pay much more in the long run, when ever efficient beurocracies share tax dollars as make-up pay to Walmonkeys. This is the world's richest retailer, and the Walton heirs are the #2,3,4 and 5 richest people in the world. Thank you Waltons, poverty is awesome.

Here's a report by U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce by Rep. George Miller (D) of Cali.

yeah im a college student and yeah they pay kinda sucks, but thats retail for ya. I don't know where the managers were telling associates to take advantage of welfare and foodstamps, but I know I never have.....I make enough to take care of myself and pay my bills, not much else.

22. Republican Donors & Right Wing Zealots
to the extent I can identify them, and have a choice (as I DON'T with many necessities). Conversely, I'm also going out of my way to support Democratic donors.

Don't get me wrong, I keep an eye on environmental practices and labor standards (two biggies for me) but, since the worst offenders are generally the bigest Repub donors, there's rarely a conflict. I just made a decision in 2002 to stop giving my money to companies that then turn around and use it against me.

The Repubs keep saying "let the free market decide" - well then, THIS member of the "free market" intends to reward those that uphold my values, and punish those that don't. It's not as effective as I'd like it to be, but it's something, anyway. If we had more access to the information we need to FIND OUT who's acting against our values, I'd be a lot more content with this "free market" philosopy of consumer action. As it is, it's very difficult to really know what a company is doing "behind the scenes" with their money. Open Secrets and Newsmeat help, some, but those are primarily concerned with donations to candidates and political parties. Federal election disclosure regulations doesn't specifically cover something like Curves and Domino's pizza's donations to anti-choice organizations. (Only in relation to their donations to associated lobbying groups.) So it's an imperfect tool, but it's the one I've got.
