"I want an America...
where CEO's don't make 531 times what workers earn, even as they ship their headquarters to Bermuda and their jobs to China.

where men and women have the chance to go to college, get good jobs, maybe even start their own businesses -- regardless of their background. Where the kitchen table is a place to share dreams -- not to worry and struggle over paying the credit card bills, the mortgage, the tuition payments."

5. OK
The illusion of freedom in America will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way, and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theatre.
---Frank Zappa, 1977

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
---President Dwight D. Eisenhower

You're not to be so blind with patriotism that you can't face reality. Wrong is wrong, no matter who does it or says it.
---Malcolm X

If you assume that there's no hope, you guarantee that there will be no hope. If you assume that there is an instinct for freedom, there are opportunities to change things, there's a chance you may contribute to making a better world. That's your choice.
--- Noam Chomsky

Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does.
--- Jean-Paul Sartre

You must be the change you want to see in the world.
--- Mahatma Ghandi

If you do follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while waiting for you, and the life you ought to be living is the one you are living. When you can see that, you begin to meet people who are in the field of your bliss, and they open the doors to you. I say, follow your bliss and don't be afraid, and doors will open where you didn't know they were going to be.
--- Joseph Campbell

Now. Or never.

6. here is a bunch

"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else."

"Roosevelt in the Kansas City Star", 149

"History is an agreed upon set of Lies"- Napolean

"The great masses of people will more easily fall victims to a big lie than to a small one. Especially if it is repeated over and over." -- Adolph Hitler

The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie, deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.— John F. Kennedy

"To sin by silence when they should protest, makes cowards of men." --Abraham Lincoln

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed."====Dwight D Eisenhower, Republican General and 34th President of the US

"I believe that religion, generally speaking, has been a curse to mankind - that its
modest and greatly overestimated services on the ethical side have been more
than overcome by the damage it has done to clear and honest thinking.
-- Henry Louis Mencken

"What does it matter to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?" --Mahatma Gandhi

"You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, The Swiss hold the America's Cup, France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, and Germany doesn't want to go to war."Dave Paulsen

I'm reminded of this old quote from Joseph Stefano (PSYCHO)--"the greatness of evil lies in ints awful accuracy. Without that deadly talnet for being in the right place at the right time, evil MUST suffer defeat. For unlike its' opposite, good, evil is allowed NO human failings, no miscalculations, Evil must be perfect...or depend upon the imperfections of others."

>"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President,
or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong,
is not only unpatriotic and servile,
but is morally treasonable to the American public."
President Theodore Roosevelt

You don't have to have fought in a war to love peace. ~Geraldine Ferraro~

resolved to combine our efforts to accomplish these aims. ~Preamble, Charter of the United Nations~

When you're finally up on the moon, looking back at the earth, all these differences and nationalistic traits are pretty well going to blend and you're going to get a concept that maybe this is really one world and why the hell can't we learn to live together like decent people? ~FRANK BORMAN

I heard the bells on Christmas Day. Their old familiar carols play. And wild and sweet the words repeat. Of peace on earth and goodwill to men. ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow~

Peace with a club in hand is war. ~Portuguese Proverb~

Peace is the one condition of survival in this nuclear age. ~Adlai E. Stevenson~

I am as deeply concerned about our own troops there as anything else. For it occurs to me that what we are submitting them to in Vietnam is not simply the brutalizing process that goes on in any war where armies face each other and seek to destroy. We are adding cynicism to the process of death, for they must know after a short period there that none of the things we claim to be fighting for are really involved. Before long they must know that their
government has sent them into a struggle among Vietnamese, and the more sophisticated surely realize that we are on the side of the wealthy, and the secure, while we create a hell for the poor. ~Martin Luther King~

TO REPEAT AGAIN AND AGAIN: I think that people want peace so much that one of these days government had better get out of their way and let them have it. ~Dwight Eisenhower~

of the Republican Party, and its viewers use it the same way a
drunk uses a lamp post, for support, not illumination.

"You know why conservatives love the Saudi government? Because it stands for verything they do. It oppresses women, it forces religion down people's throats, and it loves money above everything else. Those are the three fundamentals of conservatism."James Carville, Crossfire, 11/25/02

"Of course the people don't want war ...but, after all, it is the leaders of the country
who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament or a communist dictatorship ... voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger." -- Hermann Goering, one of the original Nazis at his Nuremberg trial in 1946

The most important thing is for us to find osama bin laden. It's our #1 priority & we will not rest until we find him".....George W. BushSep. 13, 2001

"Mankind has cured most major diseases, put men on the moon, space probes into interstellar space, plumbed the oceans to their depths, created radio, TV, computers, the internet, unraveled the genetic code, and harnessed the power of the atom; all these wonders humans have achieved and yet we still cut our neighbors' throats over whose god has the biggest dick."__Professor Israel Shahak - Israeli Human Rights Activist - 1933~2001

"Yesterday was President's Day, and next week is a new holiday, dedicated to the Bushes... One Term President's Day"- David Letterman03. 19. 03

To announce that there must be no criticism of the President,
or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong,
is not only unpatriotic and servile,
but is morally treasonable to the American public

President Theodore Roosevelt

"When even one American - who has done nothing wrong -- is forced by fear to shut his mind and close his mouth, then all of Americans are in peril." -- Harry S. Truman

writerman quoted this:

"What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."" -- JFK

"We know perfectly well what to expect ... has become the party of great vested interest; corruption at home, aggression to cover it up abroad; trickery of tariff juggles, tyranny of party machine; sentiment by the bucketful, patronage by the pint; openhand at the public exchequer; open door at the public house; dear food for the millions ... and ... cheap labour by the millions...'

"Liberalism is not socialism, and never will be... Liberalism has its own
history and its own tradition. Socialism has its own formulas and aims.
Socialism seeks to pull down wealth; Liberalism would preserve private
interests in the only way in which they can be safely and justly
preserved, namely, by reconciling them with public right. Socialism
would kill enterprise; Liberalism would rescue enterprise from the
trammels of privilege and preference. Socialism assails the pre-eminence
of the individual; Liberalism seeks, and shall seek more in the future,
to build up a minimum standard for the mass. Socialism exalts the rule;
Liberalism exalts the man. Socialism attacks capital; Liberalism attacks
monopoly."
-- Winston Churchill

" Two days. That was all it took for the people of Spain to become impatient, to pressure their government for the truth. When they did not get it, they threw that government out on it's ear. Whereas they feel very little shame at being terrorized intellectually and are scarcely conscious of the fact that their freedom as human beings is impudently abused...physical intimidation has its significance for the mass as well as the individual...For the successes which are thus obtained are taken by the adherents as a triumphant symbol of the righteousness of their own cause; while the beaten opponent very often loses faith in the effectiveness of any further resistance."-Adolph Hitler, 'Mein Kampf'

For those who stubbornly seek freedom, there can be no more urgent task than to come to understand the mechanisms and practices of indoctrination. 10. hear are some goodones about fear
"let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself"
Franklin D. Roosevelt, Inaugural Address, March 4, 1933

Taking a new step, uttering a new word, is what people fear most.

- Dostoyevsky

If someone betrays you once it is their fault, if someone betrays you twice it is your fault.

- Elenor Roosevelt

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every expierence in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself. "I lived through this horror. I can take teh next thing that comes along."

- Elenor Roosevelt, You Learn By Living. 1960

The only thing we have to fear is fear it'self - nameless, unreasoning, unjustified, terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance

- Fdr - First Inaugural Address, March 4, 1933

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

- Frank Herbert, Dune - Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear

One of the things which danger does to you after a time is -, well, to kill emotion. I don't think I shall ever feel anything again except fear. None of us can hate anymore - or love.

- Graham Greene - The Confidential Agent (1939)

the things you fear are undefeatable, not by there nature, but by your approach

- Jewel Kiltcher (Singer)

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

- John Stuart Mill

Never fear shadows.... that always means there is a light shining somewhere.

- Jonathan Santos

I think guns do kill people, though I suspect hate-mongering white supremacist groups that trade in fear and ignorance have something to do with it as well.

- Peter Hyman

that feeling isn't fear, it's just telling you to MOVE !!

- Rancid

Anyone who clings to the historically untrue -- and -- thoroughly immoral doctrine that violence never solves anything I would advise to conjure up the ghosts of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington and let them debate it. The ghost of Hitler would referee. Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor; and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and their freedoms.

- Robert Heinlein

Most people live dejectedly in wordly joys or sorrows. They sit on the sidelines and do not join in the dance. The knights of infinity are dancers and possess elevation. They rise up and fall down again, and this is no mean pastime, nor unpleasant to behold.

- Søren Kierkegaard, "Fear and Trembling"

The violent have been victorious for most of history because they kindled the fear with which everyone is born.

Is it that they fear the pain of death or could it be they fear the joy of life?

- Toad The Wet Sprocket - Pray Your Gods

Life is only a outer layer, for reality is only realized by the insane.

Democrats rail against the states rights expressed by the Tenth Amendment and absurdly argue that the placement of a comma reflects the founders' original intent to limit gun ownership to members of 18th century militias. 23. I cried more than all the children in the world
...it was then the Woman disappeared. I shed more tears than God would have dared to ask.

I went out into the endless city. (O fatigue!) Drowning in the deaf night and in flight from happiness. It was like a winter night, with a fall of snow to smother the world with precision. I cried to friends: "Where is she hiding?" and they gave me false answers. I stood before the windows of the place she goes every night; I ran through an endless garden. Everywhere I was turned away. At all of this I cried incessantly. I went down at last to a place full of dust, where I sat upon the girders, and in that night wept out all the tears in my body -- yet my tears returned, to be wept out again and again.

I understood she returned to her everyday life; that mercy would turn in its orbit more slowly than any sun. She never came back, and will never come back, my adorable, who visited me in my room -- which I would never have thought possible. This time, believe me, I cried more than all the children in the world.

---Rimbaud, The Wastelands of Love

***

These passages imprinted themselves on my brain after an early love fell apart. I raise it now because, curiously (to me), after 20+ years, the phrases "I shed more tears than God would have dared to ask...yet my tears returned, to be wept out again and again...this time, believe me, I cried more than all the children in the world" have resonated again, several times, since December 12, 2000. On 9-11, of course; and again when the bombs began to drop on Afghanistan; once again when we attacked Irag; and still again when reading the first thread here about viewing the Berg video. It never ends. Disappointment dwells just below the surface, ready to be plucked again to sound its sour note. So much happens; has happened so quickly these last few years. Our tears fill oceans.

OK, OK, just a blue night.

Others also did variations on it.

"Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country." Hermann Goering.

So I got a letter recently from Congressperson Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Leader of the House, that stated among many, many truths that she laid out about this maladministration, this ancedote and quote:

"An op-ed by Paul Krugman in the New York Times noted, 'What that scene demonstrated ( the cutting of veterans benefit by the House by 28.3 billion) was the belief of the Republican leadership that if it wraps itself in the flag, and denounces critics as unpatriotic,it can get away with anything'."

28. My sig line has been my mantra that keeps me going in BushTimes
From Hekate's personal meditations:

"Blessed art Thou, O Lady our Goddess, Mother of the Universe, who has kept us alive, and has preserved us, and enabled us to reach this day." (I recast an old blessing when something longed-for arrived quite suddenly)

Know Thy Enemy

"The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women.
It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism
and become lesbians." Pat Robertson, The Christian Coalition, August 1992 fund-raising letter
"Presumably on the same day." Ellen Goodman, Columnist, Boston Globe, October 20, 1992

From Woman and Nature, by Susan Griffin:

"This Earth -- What She Is to Me
This earth is my sister; I love her daily grace, her silent daring, and how loved I am -- how we admire this strength in each other, all that we have lost, all that we have suffered, all that we know: we are stunned by this beauty -- and I do not forget: what she is to me, what I am to her."

From the writings of Thich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese Buddhist monk:

"Putting the Little Pain to Sleep
The rain is falling softly.
I listen deeply to the sorrow within myself.
Please go to sleep, my dear little pain.
Let me embrace you tenderly, and let my in-breath and out-breath
continue to lull you to sleep.
Day and night I water the seeds of compassion and forgiveness,
so that tomorrow the flowers of joy can bloom.
Go to sleep my little knots;
tomorrow there will be a transformation
and we shall be able
to help love to be reborn again."

"May I be happy, may I be peaceful, may I be free."

From The Flag, by Mike Boehm, Chair of the My Lai Peace Park Project and Viet Nam vet:

"I looked into the eyes of my enemy
And saw myself
To kill him would be suicide
To love him would be salvation..."

From The Lord of the Rings, by JRR Tolkein

"I wish the Ring had never come to me... I wish none of this had happened." Frodo
"So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." Gandalf

From Women Who Run With the Wolves, by Clarissa P. Estes

"Where does Wild Woman live?
At the bottom of the well,
in the headwaters,
in the ether before time.
She lives in the tear and the ocean.
She lives in the cambria of trees, which pings as it grows.
She is from the future and from the beginning of time.
She lives in the past and is summoned by us.
She is in the present and keeps a chair at our table,
stands behind us in line,
and drives ahead of us on the road.
She is in the future
and walks backward in time to find us now.
She lives in the green poking through the snow,
she lives in the rustling stalks of dying autumn corn,
she lives where the dead come to be kissed
and the living send their prayers.
She lives in the place where language is made.
She lives on poetry and percussion and singing.
She lives on quarter notes and grace notes,
and in a cantata, in a sestina, and in the blues.
She is the moment just before inspiration bursts upon us.
She lives in a faraway place
that breaks through to our world."

Hekate
(who remembered to hope when she read all this in her journal)
