the whole 'operation iraqi occupation' torture thing, yes, but the bush jr. years as a whole. i assume we can agree that this episode which is still exploding is one of the lowest points in remembered history. and one of the most shameful moments. maybe there are more than ten, maybe there is a top ten most shameful american moments. an awful lot of awful things have gone down under lady liberty's eyes, and well before that. i won't say it's THE most, but this certainly is A most shameful moment.

2. I would say it is way up there
And I just read Howard Zinn.

The scale of it, the propaganda -- it really is unprecedented. Have we ever been this deeply fascist before?

7. The Tuskeegee Experiments
The Trail of Tears

Stealing a lot of mexican land in the Mexican American war

How we took Hawaii

The My Lai Massacre (well the Whole Vietnams War)

The Japanese Internment (which Someone Else has Mentioned)

The Civil Rights struggle (or more precisely, the parts where the south struggled to retain segregation. The struggle itself was great, but the violence directed against Blacks and Civil rights workers was horrendous)

Reconstruction and the Growth of the Ku Klux Klan (see my comments above, although this might have been worse, because the upshot of Reconstruction was, that the Segregationists won).

Operation Paper Clip

Overthrowing the Government of Guatemala

Seizing the Panama Canal

Now I am, believe it or not, proud of my contry on the whole; I think the Positives that America has done and embodied outwheigh the negatives (although I'll understand if many of you disagree with my assessment), but I don't think we need to 1) pretend like the problems of our day are unique and never before faced 2) whitewash our history.

8. Bush's presidency is *the* lowpoint of American history, because
Edited on Sun May-16-04 05:38 PM by Cat Atomic
it represents a breakdown of the system on so many levels.

The stolen election, the fraudulent invasion, the looting of the public treasury by his cronies from Corporate America... the list goes on and on. There are shades of aristocracy (with the son of a former president assuming the post and adopting his dad's old colleagues).

We can find bigger body counts in US history, to be sure. But Bush's presidency is the single lowest point in our history simply because of the sheer depth of corruption.
