So, how do I donate money to Gray Davis and Cruz Bustamante?
I remember reading that Davis has no limits on his spending to fight the Yes vote on the ballot. And I understand Bustamante does of a limit. So I how do I give money to them.

The fact that Davis has no spending limits might be his best hope to, not win (he's definitely going to lose--there's no way that enough no voters will be motivated to vote on this thing), but to do what it takes to get Cruz elected.

2. Phone (310) 201-0344
They'll take your donation by credit card on the spot. (Davis needs just a little more time to take online donations. Everything happened so suddenly, as you can imagine.)

As for Bustamante, phone (213) 897-7086 and ask for the telephone number to his campaign office. (Don't ask for anything more. It's his Los Angeles phone number for his state office.) Here, too, they're scrambling a bit, so you should go by phone for the time being.

But all that is why we have political parties. You can contribute online for the recall fight by visiting the California Democratic Party web site. That's the fastest and easiest way to contribute, and the money will go toward the most politically sensible strategy (which is a "No, then Bustamante" campaign).

4. Related question: how does one transmit info to them?
Edited on Mon Aug-11-03 09:56 AM by robbedvoter
Several kick-ass researchers unearthed interesting connections - Arnie, Lay Rove et al. I'd love to give that to Davis - but where do I send it?
On edit, I did send them to the party site, but if anyone knows of a more direct addy (campaign website) let us know.

Join "Beat the Recall!"...I've already mailed in my donation.

Concerned Citizens for California (C3) is registered with the California Secretary of State, F.P.P.C. ID No. 1248145.

Concerned Citizens for California Mission Statement. We will work to keep California government honest and fair for all. We will fight any attempt by extremists on the right or the left to undermine the democratic process.

C3 is a statewide organization formed to stop the takeover of California's government by right-wing extremists. Californians held an election for Governor less than one year ago. Petitions to recall the Governor were being circulated barely one month after the Governor took the oath of office.

Contributions to C3 generated by our website will go toward funding a Vote-by-Mail program to encourage like minded voters to Vote No on the Recall at the October 7, 2003, statewide special Election.

11. Whatever.
It's all about the money. The guy with the most money almost always wins. Of course there's a question as to whether the person with the most money is getting it because they're the best candidate. But I'm not taking any chances. The first election is always the money raising election (vote with your dollar). Usually with winner of that elections wins the general election (vote with your vote).

As I said, you can't take any chances. Vote with your dollar first. Let the Republicans and the Democrats know where you stand.

14. thats not true, take it back
Huffington, Simon, and a bundle of others have tried to buy their senate seats with unlimited cash and it hasnt worked yet. It sounds like some post modern political telemarketing or something to say "send money, they cant get enough from the prison guard lobby". They dont need your money, they need your vote. Just be sure youre a prison guard if you want something in return.

35. Do you know how shitty a job being a prison guard is? Read Pallast.
When you're a prison guard, profit margins can make the difference between life and death.

By the way. The person with the most money almost always wins, but it's not clear whether it's the money that's the cause, or if being a bad candidate means you don't get the money.

I say, leave nothing to chance. Win the money vote and win the vote vote. Donate money! Why let the rich rule the world. It's time for the masses to outwieigh the wealthy's political power by giving money and by voting.

if your candidate doesn't have money, they arent going to be able to afford the media necessary to explain to the public what their positions are.

12. Great article by Conason
West Coast farce no laughing matter
California recall threatens to hijack democracy

California’s current freak show, also known as the recall campaign, has rightly been disparaged as a parody of democracy. Bankrolled by a millionaire car-alarm salesman, the impending "election" now threatens to depose a governor who was duly elected seven months ago. Among the hundreds of publicity hounds who have filed to run, the candidate most likely to win is an actor who refuses to talk about issues or speak with reporters, except to repeat hackneyed one-liners from his old movies. The estimated cost will be no less than $66 million, further depleting a state whose politically overburdened finances supposedly provoked this exercise.

The darkly comedic quality of this situation is illustrated by reports that New York Governor George Pataki -- as guilty as his California counterpart, Gray Davis, of misleading voters about his state’s fiscal condition last year -- will soon venture out to the coast to campaign for the recall. Mr. Pataki, whose popularity ratings have plunged since his own re-election, is fortunate indeed that voters will have to wait slightly less than four years to dump him.

Bizarre as it surely is, the California recall is just the latest in a series of episodes that demonstrate the Republican Party’s unquenchable urge to seize power by whatever means are available -- even when that means vandalizing American political norms and traditions. Amusing as it is to imagine Arnold Schwarzenegger as governor of the nation’s most populous state, the impulses leading toward that conclusion are extraordinarily serious and potentially dangerous.

15. Petition to stop the recall
(Found this on Bartcop's forum.)

From progressive majority

We’re working so quickly to get this out the door - we haven’t even had a chance to format this e-mail in Progressive Majority’s regular e-mail template. I wanted you to know about this new campaign as soon as possible.

Just like they did in Florida in 2000, right-wing interest groups are pushing to overturn the results of a free and fair election. This time they're using an arcane recall petition to go after a governor who was re-elected less than a year ago. Progressive Majority isn't getting into the candidate fray, but we are launching an online petition asking people like you to speak out in opposition to this power grab. Take one minute right now to sign the petition by clicking on the link below or keep reading for more information.

http://involve.progressivemajority.org/action/index.asp?step=2&item=11167

This recall effort is not a grassroots groundswell – this power grab is deliberate and calculated – wealthy right-wing interests in California began just one month after the last election. And this is bigger than a recall on the governor – this is an attempt to recall the will of 8 million voters who support workers’ rights, education, choice, environment, fair tax policies, health care and civil rights.

At Progressive Majority, we’re calling this one as we see it: this is a drive to wrap up California for Bush and the Republicans in 2004. It is being paid for and driven by the same forces that put President Bush in office in 2000. Sign the petition or keep reading.

http://involve.progressivemajority.org/action/index.asp?step=2&item=11167

Mark Rosenbaum of the ACLU told The Washington Post that, "This is going to make what happened in Florida look like spring training." (The Washington Post, Aug.12).

What does the White House have to say? Quoting White House sources, one reporter wrote last week, “For the first time in the last several months, the Republicans think they’ve got a shot at picking up the electoral votes in California, which would obviously drive the race way over onto Bush’s side in 2004.” (“The News,” CNBC, Aug. 7).

Do you get it now? If the Republicans succeed in California it will be a huge boost to Bush campaign. Please sign the petition today.

http://involve.progressivemajority.org/action/index.asp?step=2&item=11167

Thanks for all that you do.

Sincerely,

Gloria Totten

Executive Director

Progressive Majority

P.S. California is not Florida. But just as Florida was critical in 2000’s presidential election, California will be in 2004. Every electoral scenario to get rid of Bush hinges on the Democratic nominee winning California. That will be harder to do if we let Republicans buy their way into the governor’s mansion. Please act today – Join Progressive Majority in opposing the recall.

Sign the petition.

26. In Best Democracy Money Can Buy, Pallast describes how prison guards
got killed at one of those privatized prisons because, to save money, the prison wouldn't buy them radios with emergency buttons, and they wouldn't put enough of them on duty on a shift (the inmates were easily able to overwhelm them). Also, when there are riots, the prisons wait forever to call for assistance because they don't want incidents on record which would jeopardize their contracts.

34. As of two days ago, only 78 people have donated to Cuz
He has raised 500K, Arnold has 3 million (1 million of his own money) and Gray had raised 5 million.

So, why don't we up that Cruz number and throw a little more Davis's way?
