How to Act When Bush Loses
Gracious in Defeat, Gracious in Victory. Do not make a pest of yourself by calling up every right winger who has tormented you for the past four years and saying, Nyah Nyah. Do not come into the office with a smirk. You may, of course, be bleary-eyed and hung over from the party the night before, but don't lord it over your office mates.

Eschew triumphalism. Do not whistle "Happy Days are Here Again" or Handel's Hallelujah chorus. Behave as much as you can as if it were a normal day in your life. If you find yourself busting out laughing, try at least to cover your mouth.

When you know you are far enough away from anyone who is likely to be offended, you can holler out Yippee!! at the top of your voice. Be cool. Accept congratulations graciously. Do not snicker. Remember: right wingers are people, too.

But it's gonna be AWFULLY hard not to gloat. In my mind, even now, I'm cuing up that song (forget whose it is) "na-na-na-na, na-na-na-na, hey-hey-hey, goo-ood BYE!"

I have an artist colleague who gloated, bigtime, when the bushies stole the election. I have never been able to forget this or get past it. I can clearly remember that day when a bunch of us females were getting together for coffee. She said she was invited to a party where she knew there were going to be lots of Gore supporters. She described in great detail how she was going to dress in a cowboy hat and cowboy boots and go around the room gloating. I resolved right then and there that I would NEVER purchase any of her art for the rest of my life. THEN, she turned to me and suggested, in all sincerity, that I create something, myself (since I, too, am an artist) and send it to bush, because he should have something of mine. I remember gasping at her and emphatically shaking my head NO!!!!!!!!!

If I see her again, since we travel in some of the same friend/art/church group circles, I KNOW at least that I shall smile sweetly at her, and maybe wave. She may get it, she may not. She'll undoubtedly be hurting that day. And while I won't rub it in, deep-down I will DEFINITELY be savoring it.

And I've got ANOTHER artist colleague, a former mom from our school (who's no longer a factor, really, since she moved back to New York and her kids don't go to our school anymore). She, too, was just a RABID pro-bushie. Claimed to have grown up near the family in Connecticut, and spoke of prescott bush in hushed tones. Get this: during the school Halloween parade - the F-ing HALLOWEEN PARADE in 2000, there were two kids from my daughter's class who dressed up as Al and Tipper Gore, and arrived with campaign signs. The whole student body marched, grade by grade, around the parking lot for the parade. When these two kids passed by, this mother actually BOO'ed! SHE BOO'ED!!!!! SHE BOO'ED THESE KIDS!!!!!!!!! FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I OFTEN think of her every time another news story comes out about how shitty the bush regime is, and wonder how she's feeling now, and whether any of this has made her examine her conscience or provoked a change of heart. Which I doubt. In November, when Kerry wins, I will be raising a SPECIAL glass in a toast to her. This one's for YOU, Claudia! And FUCK you very much!

Isn't that awful? I know I'll probably take the high road, at least outwardly, and NOT gloat, as much as these assholes deserve to have their noses rubbed in it (they certainly didn't hesitate to rub MY nose in it, or stop to consider MY broken heart when bush stole the election). But inside, in my heart of hearts, I know how I'll be feeling. I'm sorry it's come to this. Pretty icky, I realize. I'm sorry I feel that way.

But I do.

I'll watch his concession speech (although I suspect he lacks the class and dignity to give one) but I won't expose myself to the sound of his voice or sight of his face anymore than I have to. When President Kerry is sworn in I plan to treat the previous 4 years as a very bad nightmare: something to be forgotten and not relived.

Edited on Tue May-18-04 03:00 AM by drumwolf
The Repigs could still do a lot of damage even if Kerry wins, through the press and especially if they still have the Senate and/or House.

This country will continue to be completely polarized even if Kerry wins (and yes, it's still "if", not "when") and getting too smug and cocky could backfire on us if the neocons re-mobilize while we aren't looking.

And I don't agree with the way many DU'ers are taking it for granted that Bush will lose for sure. Sure, things are definitely looking like a world of shit for him nowadays, but the election is still six months away and anything can happen in that time. We absolutely cannot afford to get cocky and complacent, no matter how tempting it might be.

35. You are TOTALLY correct. This is NO time to get complacent
because, unfortunately, it's NOT in the bag and November's a long way off. Even though I'm presently starting to hear "November isn't soon enough - I want him OUT NOW!" from more voices than just mine. My husband blurted that one out, just yesterday, and he's usually the model of decorum and "well, let's be reasonable" and "rise above it."

But you're quite correct. We MUST NEVER DROP OUR GUARD AGAIN! These thugs, assuming they DO lose, WILL do everything they can to stay viable so they can fight another day. Remember what - I think - Joseph Wilson said, or one of these good-guys said, about how cheney and rummy came back into office with the mentality of "lots of unfinished business to tend to, after an eight-year hiatus." They'll try to maneuver themselves into power again, any way they can. THESE are the real "sore losermans," folks. They won't go quietly. They will give everything they've got to regaining power, and they will work under the radar in Congress and the judiciary and the right wing think-tanks and right-wing media to get back in the game. They will not rest. Neither should we. It doesn't end with a Kerry victory. We only start the next chapter.

We need to focus on winning, and then on bringing these criminals to justice. Our relentless focus should be to set back these people for AT LEAST a generation. SET THEM BACK SO FAR THEY CAN NEVER RECOVER.

These thugs are like badgers: They'll roll over and emit the stink of death, and when the dogs come to investigate, they pull out their claws. Neocons, like badgers, will be at their most vicious when they're on their backs.

9. We need to demand...
...criminal prosecution of not only the shrub and his weeds, but of all 'pubs. We need to work hard to make it an illegal party, similar to their treatment of communists during the 1950s. We need to literally wipe them all out. They must be exterminated like cockroaches while we have a chance. They should be given a choice: convert or starve. That is the only way. We will only have a short while to get this done -- for our very survival, we must be quick and merciless in our efforts.

Why, do you ask???

Because if they are ever able to steal their way back into office, they will do the same to us.

92. You say "oh brother" but...
...look at the persecution they tried to put us through for the past four years. Before 9/11, could you have EVER imagined something as horrific as the "patriot act" or "carnivore" or other schemes to strip us of our constitutional rights??? Could you have ever imagined people being imprisoned indefinitely, incommunicado, for nothing more than their political beliefs? (THEY say that those people are terrorists...but THEY have never been required to prove their case in court...therefore: political prisoners)?

What if they would have had a solid 'pub majority where their legislation and judicial appointments couldn't have been held up by the Senate? What kind of country would we have lived in??

No, the only way is to make their kind extinct (no...I am not talking physically, only politically and economically).

Oh, brother...can I have a little bit of that cool-aid too??

If they live to fight another day, they'll fight us and probably win. These people fight dirty and fight as though their lives depended on it. They fight for keeps. We have to, also, if we expect to keep them off their guard.

Did NO ONE learn anything about the ruthless, take-no-prisoners thug tactics we saw on parade in November through mid-December of 2000? Does NO ONE remember?

Maybe not so brutally worded ("exterminated like cockroaches") but nevertheless quite true. Sad but true. Unless you're okay with the Bad Guys winning and winning and winning until they really have won it all like they think they did this time.

LOOK: Every time they've had a setback, they've learned. I've read an interesting quote from somewhere that said, in effect, that if these people were in charge during the Nixon era, they would have BURNED the tapes. That's why you won't find tapes or other easily incriminating droppings around them now. They learned. They learned very well from the Clinton era, too. WHY DO YOU THINK bush HAS NEVER ALLOWED HIMSELF TO BE PUT UNDER OATH???????????????

Take a moment and answer that for yourselves.

These people ARE very able students, even if their "fearless leader" is anything but. They've learned a lot from past mistakes. That's why they've stacked the deck to make sure there won't be any impeachment to worry about. They've worked this problem from the ground up, from their BIG defeat in the Goldwater campaign in 1964. They learned their lessons VERY well. Which is why we're ALL paying for it now.

We MUST keep them off their guard FOREVER. We need to turn the tables on them and make sure THEY are the people who are villified and demonized, with the Mark of Cain on them, so they CAN'T regroup and gather momentum again and retake power in four to eight years. By then, learning the lessons from this time, there will very likely be no stopping them at all.

Think of it: EVEN NOW, they're learning that the most urgent priority for next time, whenever that may be, is to silence or stifle or otherwise control the internet. That's where we all took refuge and were able to get to the truth and find out what was really going on, and hear alternative voices that were muzzled in the mainstream media, and more importantly, CONNECT WITH EACH OTHER TO PROMOTE ACTIVISM and regain lost ground. EVEN NOW, they're learning that it's a REALLY bad idea to allow soldiers in the field (heck, ANYBODY who's not a card-carrying true-believer or trusted, impeccably-credentialed operative) to have email access or digital cameras. They will do EVERYTHING they can to short-circuit these things so they are neutralized as a potential problem next time. BANK ON IT.

That is why it IS important to demonize and marginalize them, leave them with the Mark of Cain. Label them as LOSERS. Give them such a skunk bath no one will want to come close. GOTTA SOUR THE MILK so no one will drink and no babes will suckle. Turn their message on its ass and make it one to shun, not to embrace.

WE HAVE TO. It's ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL. Otherwise, they will take over AGAIN some day, sooner than later. They WILL survive to fight another day. If we don't stop them and keep them frozen in the stop position. It'll be hard. Damn. It may be impossible. But it cannot be dismissed or ignored.

DO NOT BE LULLED INTO COMPLACENCY. I can think of at least a couple of very intelligent, discerning, otherwise compassionate women I know who assured me repeatedly that NOTHING would happen to endanger Roe V Wade. "Aw, it's not gonna happen. Not gonna happen. You're over-reacting. Don't be ridiculous! It's NOT gonna happen. Don't worry about it." I heard that again and again. They thought I was Chicken Little. NOW, thanks to their gullibility, short-sightedness, and sheer idiocy, we ARE INDEED almost there. In fact, EVERYTHING bad that I warned them about has happened. Up to and including the war. One of these same women laughed at me and thought I was so funny and so "quaint" when I went out to the anti-war rallies and vigils. She thought I was crazy - "oh, my silly little hippie friend - you're so cute!" She just KNEW it was going to be as glorious and great and successful and triumphant as all the soothing, red-white-and-blue propaganda promised it would be. She's MIGHTY quiet these days. I have another friend who wasn't too sure about bush himself, but was ROCK-SOLID CERTAIN that he was going to surround himself with good people, so that would take care of everything. Man, is she singing a different tune today. Now, it's those same wonderful, outstanding people around him whom she's complaining about most.

Okay, don't go all out and try to exterminate the cockroaches. But at least make sure they're extremely well-managed and well-contained!!!! It's just your country, your world, and your children's future that's at stake. That's all.

10. The flag will come out the garage
Ever since 12/12/2000, I have not had the heart - my country died.

But, even if Kerry wins big, the aftermath of *bush will be something that may take a geneneration to recover from. If the republicans still control both Houses of Congress, it will be hard to even start the repairs. But at least there will be hope again.

When Bush took office, I figured that for every month he was in, the damege would take 1-2 months to repair (4-8 years for a full term). But after Sept, 2001, I think the damage went up to something like 4-6 months of repair per *bush year. After a year in Iraq, the rate of damage has gone up even more.

I got a huge Carvel on election day in '92 and '96, drenched in chocolate crunchies. Dominated it before the polls even closed out West. Glad I didn't purchase in 2000. It would have tumbled out thw window once they reversed the Florida call.

Funny, I was just surveying the Carvel cabinet in the grocery store yesterday. Complacent optimism?

My fringe rightwing friends will receive Christmas cards for the first time in at least three years. No mention of the election at all, but when they see the return address label they'll know exactly my smartass reason for including them again.

Oh, my G20's horn will get a workout, also. After my voice departs. Plenty of Rs within shouting distance.

Yes, we must remember that, physiologically speaking, they are Homo Sapiens (though they would likely be enraged at being called Homo, the dumbasses!).

However, after listening to their rhetoric of the past decade and watched their foul (but still nonviolent nor OVERTLY racist) deeds, where they essentially demonized and dehumanized Liberals in very much the same (but not EXACTLY the same) as Nazis.

They convinced me. Lurking inside them is all the evil of the Nazis, just waiting for "permission" to be unleashed by their Masters. Perhaps these people have always been with us and that's why the Founding Dads made this nation so tough to subjugate and De-Constittuionalize as the Busheviks are attempting.

Yep. They convinced me. They're Nazis, they're Commies, they're the Tonton Macoute and the Colombian Right-Wing Death Squads.

They are the Brownshirts and may well be the Nationalized Neighborhood Watch very soon.

Vigilance. Eternal vigilance.

You have no idea how many copies of that obscene PHOTOSHOP showing the "Seal of the Democratic Party" with a crying baby in the middle captioned "You lost, the grownups are in charge, get over it" I received here at work.

The MIRACLE will be if we take back the House or Senate or BOTH. If THAT happens, you can count on me calling in sick because I will get so drunk I expect to hurling in the back yard so the kids can see. Actually, I will probably do the same thing if Bush steals it again.

I will be saying "THE IDIOTS AND CRIMINALS ARE GONE!" loudly and proudly. Too bad we will all likely be under martial law the day after the rePukes lose.

39. IMO they need to be thoroughly destroyed in their defeat.
Edited on Tue May-18-04 09:08 AM by msmcghee
Publicly and in a way that the lesson will be remembered in the history books!

Not in a vengeful way, but in an instructive way for the good of our nation they need to understand that the price of attacking our democracy and all non-RW voters is very steep - and that liberals are not ready to ignore those crimes.

Democracy requires, demands, that we respect all opinions and treat each other fairly. Turning public discourse into a partisan hit-machine to gain power is a huge crime against our our most basic national values. They need to be thoroughly discredited.

Also, we must realize that they have built a huge RW machine that now pervades every branch of government, the federal courts and the media. Simply defeating Bush will not make those people go away and decide to take up a new mission in life. They will immediately start plotting to destroy Kerry's presidency just like they did to Bill Clinton. (I actually believe they have groups working on that right now, just in case.)

We must drive a stake through their hearts. It will be anything but easy but it must be done thoroughly and completely for the good of our children and future generations. There will be no better or easier time to do so than in the weeks and months after Kerry's inauguration - but it will take years to complete.

The sooner we start, the better.

40. After reading my own message . .
. . I think that won't be enough.

The real problem is the 40% of our nation that line up with the political/religious zealots of the right - the RW base. It lives like a tumor in our political body.

I don't know how to change those idiots or make them go away. There were times in the past when we all considered ourselves Americans - regardless of party.

I don't know how to bring those days back. I think it will take a change in generations and a change in the basic understanding of what it means to be an American.

Hopefully Kerry can plant that message in the minds of all Americans - and we on the left can nurture it and help it grow.

. . I wonder if we really have any idea what we're up against.

Their goal seems to be to turn the US into a RW neo-conservative theocracy - and to destroy and discredit all liberals and all examples of liberal/progressive public policy. They want to get rid of all New Deal public institutions like Social Security and Medicare and privatize as many public services as possible.

They are well on their way and a Kerry victory will only change their operating tactics - not their direction or their commitment.

Perhaps a Kerry win will only mark a new level of violence in this war for the hearts and minds of Americans.

50. So, do you think . .
Edited on Tue May-18-04 10:09 AM by msmcghee
. . that after Kerry wins, these people will say - "Oh, now I see where the American people really are on this ideology thing" - and go back to watching sit-coms until the next election.

I don't mean to sound sarcastic - and I'm not even sure if you were questioning my message or just saying it was interesting.

But, I believe we may have passed the tipping point in terms of polarization in this country. They may just seem a little panicky and deranged right now as Bush's numbers continue to slide past the point of no return - but can you imagine the furor and apoplexy of the RW machine, talking heads, politicians, etc. when Kerry wins?

Perhaps, only another civil war will resolve the core differences between Americans on the left and right that the RW has inflated to huge proportions in order to secure their hold on power. I hope that's not the case . . but it does seem like this whole thing has taken on a new momentum. It may be beyond anyone's ability to control it at this point.

62. I'm with markomalley up there, higher, on this thread.
Edited on Tue May-18-04 10:49 AM by calimary
AND with you, too.

We actually sort of DO know what we're up against. The most awesome, fearsome conservative, religious-fundamentalist machinery EVER. They WILL NOT GO AWAY.

So what we have to do is undercut them. Literally. Come up underneath 'em and eat away at their soft underbelly.

LISTEN UP, GUYS:

It truly IS "stake through the heart" time.

The dreaded Ralph Reed had it right. You start at the very lowest grassroots and build UP from there. You go for the county commissioners. The SCHOOL BOARD. The "little guys." Because little guys don't always STAY little guys. If they can build a power base (not surprising with the Ralph Reed fundraising machinery behind you) then they strive for higher office. But it starts at the foundational level. Look, it took the Bad Guys 30 years to build this. LONGER THAN THAT, if you go back to the defeat of Barry Goldwater in 1964. That's FORTY years. That's when they took a good, hard, long look at themselves and rolled up their sleeves.

THAT IS WHAT WE HAVE TO DO. BUILD A BASE that's as solid as a rock. TAKE BACK OUR SCHOOLS!!! If we've got the school boards, we've got the fundamentalists on the run because we short-circuit their efforts to shove "creationism" or "creation 'science'" down our throats in BIOLOGY CLASS. They want to shove literal Bible interpretation into the factual teachings in our schools. That stuff should be left in theology class, kicked around by graduate-level philosophers and seminarians. NOT in our kindergartens!!!! You grow a bunch of kids who've been fed that crap with their morning cereal and their mid-day graham crackers and your results are born-and-raised knuckle-draggers who think the world really was created in seven days, and that every last scintilla in the Bible is absolute fact, and if we can just nudge the Almighty a little, we'll force His hand and bring on Armageddon and the Rapture and the End Days and the Second Coming and all that CRAP. You'll grow kids who honestly and deeply believe that it's okay to waste the environment and squander everything live like there's no tomorrow because JAAAAAYYYYYzzzzzuss is coming again, and he's gonna come when WE say he is, and it's gonna be soon because pat robertson's just prophesied it. And since kids have this intriguing habit of growing up to become adults, you're gonna have even more Devil Spawn coming up to dominate our society and our planet with their 12th Century thinking.

So you start at the bottom and work your way up. And allow those YOU STARTED at the bottom work THEIR way up, as well. Start with a few of those little pip-squeak elections that look as though they're just really local and insignificant (they are NOT), and build from there. That's how the xian coalition did it. That's how they're so powerful today. Those kindergarteners in those schools whose school boards they took over 30 to 40 years ago are now the "adults" running much of this country - and running it straight into the ground.

71. After re-reading your and markomalley's posts . .
. . above. I agree fully.

The truth is, exclusionary intolerance and craving for power festers in the hearts of many - whether they live in a democracy or not.

It will always be there below the surface ready to metamorphose into a movement if we ever let down our guards. We can't depend on the "goodness" of our fellow Americans to prevent this - as the last thirty years proves.

Once we weed the garden, we need to create a deadly, toxic environment for those ideas so they can never germinate again.

60. End Zone Celebrations
Edited on Tue May-18-04 11:05 AM by PLA0242
I'll tell you what it is analogous to...
With all the celebrating that goes on in the end zones, one was beginning to wonder when it would go too far.

Vince Lombardi was asked by one of his players during a team meeting what his policy was concerning Packer players celebrating after a touch down. He replied something like this(paraphrasing here):

You know boys, it's okay too feel good about scoring. After all, it is the path to victory. However, when I see a player celebrating after he has scored a touchdown, it concerns me. Think about it. If you celebrate after you score, aren't you telling the other team that this is a "big deal?" That, look at me, I made it to the end zone...as if you rarely achieve this feat. Isn't it more powerful to simply place the ball in the endzone and walk away as if...it's no big deal...I've been here before and I'll be here again.

He went on to talk about how celebrations are self-serving and deny the rest of the team their due.

I thought that this was a great response to the concept of celebration and one that has stayed with me my entire life.

-Paige

My late father used to have a Vince Lombarti quote on a plaque in his office. It read (I'm paraphrasing): Winning isn't a sometime thing, it's an all time thing. There's no second place. There's only room for one place and that's FIRST PLACE.

We should NOT allow ourselves to become complacent. This isn't in the bag yet. But if we keep working and don't give up and don't become despondent, and keep our eyes on the prize, it will be.

79. The Bush Pardon
Sure, I'd like to feel good when Kerry wins, that is if black box voting doesn't hand the win to Bush, but since Bush and Kerry were both Skull and Bones, and judging from previous elections, my guess is that Kerry will issue blanket presidential pardons to Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and their whole gang.

So I'm voting for Kerry, but I don't plan to celebrate if he wins, at least not until I see what he does about Iraq, the Saudis, Halliburton, etc.

Kerry will have to try and lead the nation with the RW pulling at his heels and impeding him. They will hound him at every turn, and his every move will be under the closest scrutiny. The RW will try to make him take the fall for the mess that BushCo has stunk up the world with.

One facet of our post-victory job is to do what we can to keep the media on the correct course.
