Defense Research and Engineering Network just indexed my site
Here's their info. Can't find a web site about these people. They just visited every page on my web site as if they were indexing it with a bot of some sort.

Does anyone know about this outfit?

2. I did a google search on
DOD High Performance Computing Modernization Office
and it came up with this site
<http://www.hpcmo.hpc.mil/>

There were several links in the google search and this is the one I went to.

4. The funny thing is
If it's really only a high speed engineering network, why were they indexing my site? Why index a tinym insignificant web site that has nothing at all to do with the military, DREN or anything government?

Makes me wonder.

7. I'm thinking they're doing some deep information gathering
Presumably to map out web sites that are connected for future DOD work of some kind. I hope they're not planning how to shut me down.

6. Could be testing a bot...
... and you got tagged. Or, equally possible, this is just an under-the-radar continuation of the mad admiral's Total Information Awareness program, or anything in between.

I'd pass this on to a friendly reporter and ask for it to be looked into.

Cheers.

26. They haven't
You must have your Javascript turned off. They use a scripted menu system to link to other pages, the top links are inactive. Pretty piss-poor, for a gov't site.

9. Not to be paranoid or anything
but I looked at your site. My guess is they have tagged your site for future reference - such as when they declare martial law, need to find a scapegoat etc.
Good thing you caught it.

16. Oh yeah, I forgot about that stuff
That would no doubt brand me as a terrorist :)

Humor aside, I think that's probably the most dangerous stuff on my site. Especially since the BFEE is going to use it again.

not to be alarmist or anything, I don't know jack shit about computers and the internet and crap like that, but I do know what most of those printouts look like, and THAT is official-looking military shit.

It would make me nervous, but what do I know?

I log as little as possible and overwrite it all ongoingly and I don't store user agents, only ips and referrers, and even then only remporarily.

17. I had some program from Fort Belvoir ...
... constantly accessing a webpage from mysite over several weeks, chewing up bandwidth and messing with my web logs. Finally put a stop to it by installing a .htaccess file with the following contents.

<Limit GET>
order deny,allow
deny from wcs2-belvoir.nipr.mil
deny from belvoir-sun1.iern.disa.mil
deny from belvoir-sun2.iern.disa.mil
</Limit>

Beats me as to why they were constantly pulling the webpage. I figured that since there was a Cyber Warfare school at Fort Belvoir, some student was practicing a weak DoS attack.

29. "indexing"
Edited on Wed May-19-04 03:27 PM by deseo
...is merely reading and storing the contents of a web page(s) for future use. For example, Google indexes a large portion of the web. They literally save off the text so that when you search for "blah blah blah" they know where it is.

To answer another question in this thread, if you have a web server every access to every page/file is logged. The gentleman who posted this thread looked at his logs and noticed the activity.

You can use "robots.txt" to prevent search engines from indexing some or all of your pages, but a given spider/bot does not have to respect it. the .htaccess method of blocking a particular host is effective, but only to that host. Anyone who really wanted to get the info would simply do the retrieves from a different host.

They have a warning at the bottom of the page:

"Warning! This Department of Defense computer system is subject to monitoring at all times. Unauthorized access is prohibited by Public Law 99-474 (The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986)."

...and the DREN Homepage:
