Mason-Dixon Poll: Bush Leads Kerry In N.C; Edwards On Ticket Makes It Even
"With Edwards on the Democratic ticket, he increases Kerry's support primarily among women (+5%), African-Americans (+7%) and Democrats (+4%) to make the race close.

The poll, conducted May 14 - 17, has a margin of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Bush Name Recognition:
George W. Bush is more personally popular than John Kerry at present. The President's favorable and unfavorable name recognition is relatively similar to what it was in November 2000 -- just before he won the state by 13 percentage points over Al Gore. This makes it appear that he would remain the favorite to carry North Carolina if Kerry does not choose Edwards as his vice presidential running-mate."

7. It's either
10th or 11th in population, so it isn't small change. The vote may hinge on the military areas. It's a possible pick up.

18. NC has 15 electoral college votes.
And I found this great site on state by state electoral college votes:

5. It would cause Bush to spend money
in a red state that would previously be in his pocket.

I think it would be a good thing to cause Bush to spend money in a state when he wouldn't otherwise have to worry about it. Putting Edwards on the ticket causes that to happen.

Plus, my prediction is that Edwards' Senate seat will be won by Democrat Erskine Bowles.

13. Yeah, and I'd like to make him spend it.
I'd love to make him spend it in a state where he previously wasn't counting on having to spend it so much.

i certainly hope you're right. on a recent visit there, i was thrilled to see two bowles bumper stickers within the same hour...

he's certainly a great candidate, and the state would be lucky to have him as a senator.

9. We all matter
I'm not less a democrat because I live in NC. If there is a big turn out the vote effort, it could swing the dems way.

4. ok, I got a stupid question about the Mason Dixon.
Its between Pennsylvania and Maryland, which has nothing to do with N.C.

Or am I missing something here?

12. I know what the Mason dixon line is
its between PA & Maryland, I don't understand what that has to do with NC.

It was a property dispute between William Penn & someone else. The line was the settlement of the dispute.

I'm from PA, and that was hammered into my head as a child.

14. It has been used quite extensively to mean
to mean the boundary between the Northern and Southern states, or between the Union and the Confederacy during the Civil War.

It was orginally based on a specific boundary dispute, as you stated.

19. No worries. I hate the name of their poll anyway.
They could've picked a better name for the poll, if you ask me!

15. I don't think Kerry has a chance in NC
even with Edwards on ticket. The Bush attack ads have been running non-stop in Raleigh for months, many people believe them, unfortunately. The rural areas are the worst, hardcore Baptists and Bushes cowboy "bring em on" style are respected. Sad to say!

16. I guess this recent poll puts that into question however.
That is what is so exciting about it. Putting NC "into play" would be a disaster for *Bush even if he ultimately wins.
