Why not attack Bush on gas prices?
Does anyone else remember when Bush was asked, in one of the debates, what he would do about a spike in gas prices?

In his best Pappy Yokum manner, he said that he would "jawbone 'em and get 'em to open up the spigot."

Well, now we're getting reamed up one side and down the other by his buddies in the oil business and he refuses to do anything.

Does anyone else see a potentially excellent commercial here?

2. Because I am sure by mid October it will be a non issue.
Gas will be at record lows.

Aside from that, it appears many here are happy with the rising gas prices. Why would they attack him for it?

3. True, there's some glee about gas prices here.
Of course, it's safe to assume that those who are happy to see gas prices to go up either live in places where there's decent public transportation, or else have enough money that they're not much affected.

Out here where the rest of us live, high gas prices are causing a lot of pain.

4. It's really going to sucker punch the lower and middle class when the
prices for everything else start going up in kind.

And wages remain stagnant.

5. It's already happening.
Going to the grocery store is now like window-shopping at Tiffany's. Well, not quite, but you see what I mean. Even here in the smalltown South, a gallon of name-brand milk is approaching $5. Produce is getting really high, too. People are talking about it a lot around here, and this is generally Bush country. A lot of people I've spoken with lately are genuinely worried about how they are going to keep their families fed and housed, which is why all this idealistic blather about the beauty of expensive gas leaves me cold. It's all well and good for affluent urbanites, I suppose, people who can use public transport and make decent incomes, but expensive gas causes real pain for most people.

6. I could support a tax on gas that is related to the fuel economy of one's
car. I'm not sure how it could be levied. Maybe just tax the heck out of SUV's and high mileage cars

Or raise the fuel economy standards across the board on all automobiles.

But what is going on now is pure price gouging. And it is kicking the crap out of the lower class.

7. I could support that, too.
Perhaps a gas tax rebate based on income, a gas-guzzler tax, tax breaks for buying fuel efficient cars, etc. But you're right, what we have going on now is nothing more than gouging and it is causing real pain for real people.
