I don't understand the "God Hates Fags" nuts

The plain homophobia I can understand--not condone, or agree with--since it's a typical pathology.

But why exactly do they also carry signs like "God Hates America," and simultaneously step on US and State flags?

What exactly are these creeps trying to do? Moreover, do they get locals to hold up their signs--which are at a maximum of hate per syllable--or do they have homophobic maruders going around the country helping them?

The Phelps make their living by going around the country and running hateful protests, and suing anyone who gets in their way. Most of the family are lawyers.

I didn't realize protesting was lucrative.

I wonder about his use of the word "fag". I always thought it was a cigarette butt. But words seem to be meaningless these days. Perhaps we should really try to figure out what they are really upset about?

the anti-gay movement look bad. They base it partly on the fact that Al Gore seems to have old connections with them.

After repeatedly hearing and seeing them all on Howard Stern(including the little kids) and them doing choriographed song and dance routines, I am no more or less convinced and only know they're a fascinating bunch. They might be becoming de-facto wack-packers. One of the magazine shows(Dateline, 20/20) really needs to do a profile on them.

I recall seeing a segment on them back in the 1990s. I forget which program ran it and which network it was.

At any rate, the saddest portion of the segment was the interview with a woman whose brother died of AIDS. The Phelps crowd picketed his funeral. PICKETED THE FUNERAL. That pretty much sums up the mind-set.

or at least looks pretty damned fake to me. (I've done a lot of retouching) The border is true black, unlike the nearby black lettering. (It's very rare for anything in an unretouched daylit photo to be true black) They did a decent job on the reflections, though.

Can they not help themselves from getting more and more despicable (then again - can one be more despicable then when the first burst onto the national scene, in terms of news media coverage, when they protested outside of Matthew Shepherd's funeral?)

I say, good for them. They make themselves look completely insane and irrational, and it's that much easier to argue against them.

Freepers can say "I'm not as insane or irrational as Phelps - my objections to homosexuality are more reasonable."

They are civil rights lawyers. It's so bizarre to hear them speak so eloquently about the oppression of minorities and then go Hitler on gays. Fundamentalists are all insane.

Insert whatever issue or personal phobia into “God hates _____.” And that’s supposed to be the end of the story. If you’ve ever tried to debate or reason with this argument on the nuances of God or a personal deity or the context of “scriptures” written thousands of years ago for a subset world culture that existed thousands of years ago, it’s impossible to continue any discussion based on reason or intellect. You’re simply shutdown with “The Bible says…”

Some might choose to characterize this approach as faith. “Blind faith” might better articulate it. Stupid, moronic and bigoted works best for me.

It’s impossible to argue with someone’s concept of “God” even if there are so many root similarities. Why are there so many different Southern Baptist churches in the smallest towns? It’s not about location. It’s about something as mundane as a cookie recipe or envy or self-doubt.

They don't know God so they can say whatever they want to spread fear and hatred. They use God's name in vain for this purpose. These are the people who are truly worshipping false idols. I am convinced of that. They have to go after people who are different (i.e. Gays) to reinforce their own sexuality conflicts. If that is not the case then they are insecure about themselves all the same. Plus they must have plenty of time on their hands.
