Gen. Abizaid opens his mouth: (his opening statement)

(his statement sounded like bushgang speak, he surely didn't write it)

Abizaid said: "we are winning the battle against extremism"

what a nutty thing to say

dictionary: extremism: a tendency or disposition to go to extremes or an instance of going to extremes, esp. in political matters

so I guess we can add to the reasons we invaded Iraq, the fact that we are fighting extremism. should someone tell the Iraqi?

he also said: "we cannot be beaten militarily"

the Gen. should, by now, know that one should 'never say never'

1. Are terrorists a sub-set of extremists? Are insurgents? I can't keep up.

6. I'm sure he is correct that we can not be beaten militarily
But Iraq is not a military situation and neither is the "war on terror". We are not fighting conventional forces. None would dare. What we are engaged in is a political battle with the world for it's resources. We will not win by military force.

8. Who do you think could stand up against the US Military in Convential
Warfare? I doubt the Russians could and I doubt the Chinese could either. We do have a technical advantage when in engaged in convential warfare. Granted that scenerio is highly unlikely in today's world. Our bombs are mighty powerful and our fighter jets are unsurpassed in combat. We never lost militarily to Vietnam as some would claim. We lost politically.

9. Don't be so sure that the US cannot be beat militarily
The swift do not always win the race nor do the mighty. If the US is counting on winning by nuclear then the whole human race will be obliterated. India and China make up one third(approx 2.1 billion) of the world's inhabitants so the manpower of the US military would be nil. How would the US military fight these combined forces or perhaps even one? I think this mantra of US is the mightiest military is causing people to be over confident placing their trust in military might rather than diplomacy and working for world peace and cooperation.

10. I do not disagree with you
Remember David Slew Goliath So anything is possible. My whole point was how people often equate political defeat with military defeat as in vietnam. I constantly hear how our military lost that war. It ain't so.

11. He must have forgotten that war game in which
'our side' lost to lesser equipped 'enemy' combatants.

I just looked but couldn't find anything for you to read on this one . . . but our spiffed-up, high tech up the wazoo military LOST the war game to the other side - which was commanded by one of our retired military guys and had limited supplies and tech at their disposal.

The 'enemy' commander resorted to guerrilla tactics and beat their opponents handily.
