ABC News pix of two soldiers SMILING over prisoner's CORPSE!!!!
Edited on Wed May-19-04 05:53 PM by buycitgo
they just showed a male and female soldier, leaning over a figure with cotton (?) over eyes, open-mouthed, lying in what looked like a rubber bag.

after showing these pictures (both soldiers grinning WIDELY!!!), they said he'd just been BEATEN by somebody, and had just DIED!!!!!!!!

I almost threw up when they said that.....didn't realize the poor man was dead........I was trying to complete the set, as it were.

I never look at those horrible pix when they make their hourly rounds, and this was way, way beyond the pale

anybody else see this?

these 2 new shots, along with the shots of all those wedding bodies should do wonders in winning back the Iraqi hearts and minds, yes?

EDIT

you can see them here; thanks to Dookus' link
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/wnt/Investigation/abu_ghraib_photos_040519.html

they'll turn your stomach......guaranteed

Somehow civilians in the WH or Pentagon went around the chain of command which protects against this kind of abuse. Top military brass are mad as hell.

When do the fireworks start?

6. you'll be seeing these photos for awhile, I'd guess
Edited on Wed May-19-04 06:10 PM by buycitgo
I can only remember being more disgusted by a photo one time in my life:

way back when, the National Lampoon published a photo of some Nazi "doctors", standing over a partially shrouded corpse, with only the legs (below the knee showing)

the skin/muscle, etc., had been shredded from the bones, leaving a black mass of tendon, skin, sinew.

the looks on those peoples' faces radiated a similar, purely evil glee that brings to mind the real joy that these two modern-day monsters demonstrate

you won't believe how happy the two of them look......as if they just found the love of their lives, won the lottery, and were advised they'd be spending eternity with their chimp in chief

"The Justice Department opened an investigation into this death and four others today following a referral from the CIA.

The photos were taken by Sgt. Charles Frederick, who in e-mails to his family has asked why the people responsible for the prisoner's death were not being prosecuted in the same manner that he is."

It's just gettin' started, methinks.

Powell said this weekend that bu$h was briefed on all of it.

on edit: I'm really really really interested to see how this all play sout. Bu$hco has alienated the intel agencies (FBI, CIA), and the top military brass (who hate the civilians who forced them into Iraq, have spread the military far too thin, and have enabled these travesties)... DC is set to be the stage for the biggest battle since... hell I don't even know when!

21. Thanks... These countrymen are not defending US, they are attacking US.
Edited on Wed May-19-04 06:03 PM by HypnoToad
The "woman" in the front pic and the "man" in the first slideshow pic seem to be happy about their kill. (WTF, did they poke out that guy's eyes? This is the sort of thing the nazis would do, hardly the acts of a civilized country's own servicepeople! Yet alone Americans! Did 9/11 warp everybody's minds THIS MUCH out of reality?!)

These particular "soldiers" are hardly noble and proud Americans. They're as much savages as the people they've slain. (Assuming those they've slain had themselves done acts of brutality and some of them might have. I would never call a truly compassionate and peaceful person a savage. But even still, if America goes around the world saying it's civilized, then it damn well better ACT civilized. So far we're as bad as the terrorists. Actually, we're worse. We proclaim to be compassionate and just and moral and then we go around and do this sort of barbaric cruelty to others - trial or not, this is unjustified! I don't give a fuck if these people they've slain killed us. (Remember, this is war... both sides are going to be "not nice". But compassion is not "an eye for an eye", though one soldier obviously had no qualms in poking out somebody's eyes and allowing his private buddies to take trophy photographs. x( We claim to be better, so we'd better start acting that way before we're seen unfavorably in the eyes of the world. And that would not be a good thing. Of course, it probably is too late, but at least we can try to try to do something to reclaim our good name...)

But there are honorable soldiers out there. I certainly do support THEM. But the animals in our own ranks doing this sort of depraved vulgarity? I've no sympathy for them whatsoever and they deserve the strongest punishment available. They are not defending our country. They are ATTACKING our country. Our own people in uniform, no less!

25. Not to be argumentative
but it might have been civilians doing the actual torture ("abuse" or "interrogation" in doublespeak).

So... yes these troops posing like monsters are worthy of contempt, but assigning blame for the torture and subsequent deaths seems a bit premature.

14. excellent point......AND, something that really really infuriates me,
since you brought it up, is that they've already succeeded in bowdlerizing the language of torture, by calling all these atrocities instances of "prisoner ABUSE," not TORTURE

nobody's calling it torture anymore, notice? always mere abuse

wonder how severely a prisoner has to be abused to have it considered torture

does BEATING somebody to death wander over that line, perhaps?\

just a little bit?

or getting your LEG EATEN BY AN ATTACK DOG?

abuse or torture

just curious

The people actually seen in the photos are just run of the mill underlings, nothing more.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5014199/

"FORT HOOD, Texas - Enough already was the overwhelming sentiment among troops here Wednesday to the military prison scandal in Iraq and the court-martial of Spec. Jeremy Sivits."

"It's not something everybody wants to see or hear all the time," he added. "You get tired of hearing about the same thing over and over and over on TV. We're tired of hearing about the scandals of the abuse that's over and done with."

"Sgt. Larry Best with the 4th ID agreed. "I think we should move on from it. We all know what happened already. Nothing good can come of it if (we) keep playing it over and over."

until the 60 Minutes report.

So if that is true (not likely at all) then bush has no grasp of what is going on under his command. If it is not true and bush and Rummy found out back in July (very likely)with the Red Cross reports then it seems like we have a monumental cover-up and the itshay is going to iflay . . .

45. I notice that some of the media is STILL trying to pin part of the....
...blame on the CIA:

"May 19, 2004— ABCNEWS has obtained two new photos taken at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq showing Spc. Charles Graner and Spc. Sabrina Harmon posing over the body of a detainee who was allegedly beaten to death by CIA or civilian interrogators in the prison's showers. The detainee's name was Manadel al-Jamadi."

The problem with the above statement is that we now know from recent revelations that the CIA removed themselves from the interrogations when the NeoCons decided to use torture on every detainee, not just the high-value targets as agreed upon earlier in Afghanistan.

51. Well, I think they were following orders
those orders being to pose in exactly the right way to have maximum humiliation effect. Too much of the photos that came out look like prescribed poses. Somebody in the pentagon read a book on Arab culture and laid out exactly how to go about this torture business so as to have maximum effect on other prisoners when pressurizing them for information.

A lot of posters are thinking these low-level soldiers are truly enjoying what they are doing. I actually do not.

Let me be clear, I fully agree with the argument you have to refuse an illegal order, and I can imagine some really sick people enjoying this.

But I cannot imagine the average american reservist/soldier to be like that.

The policy makers are to blame. If you have Rummy throwing Geneva out of the window, not much further needs to be looked. Only one level up...

Maybe I'm too optimistic.

In a true democracy the truth would come out during the trial of the "bad apples".

I'm not holding my breath.

50. Focus
The focus should be on who beat this person to death. Other reports of deaths from varous US prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan are slowly emerging. This is the real story that has been subject to Cover Up.The story is broader than "humiliation" and "hazing", "pranks", "abuse". The story is about torture and murder: War Crimes!
