2. it's a Red State mentality
Now, mind you I live in a Red State myself, but there is a dominant mentality in the Red States, and these soldiers appear to exhibit it.

5. I've been asking myself that question
I guess I should be glad I can't understand ....and I know no answer will satisfy me. Whatever excuses they come up with....it won't matter...I will never "get" this type of behavior...

How do you just allow your humanity to slip away? Are they missing the little brain squiggly that shouts "that's wrong!"? Are they an evolutionary throwback?

I need something that explains this...yet I know I'll never understand or accept that such people exist. Maybe once I can emotionally detach myself from it...look at it clinically..but I don't think I'll ever be so emotionally detached enough to view this behavior through anything except with my heart. My brain literally shuts down at the thought of what these people did.It stutters..why? why? why?how? how? how? ...and my heart just cries out in anger and betrayal that humans treated other humans so cruelly...so savagely.

and I know all the "reasons" a textbook case study would give...but that just doesn't cut it for me.

9. One Word: Selfish
It's the common thread I've seen in all Repugnicans. They want special rules, special perks and feel it's their right to have both. They live in a world where status is based on income and social status and their benevolence always has a quid pro quo.

This is all masked in codewords that make their avarice justified to themselves...even rewarded and as a weapon against those who stand in their way. These people have developed a superiority complex that has manifest itself in a unrealistic world view and ultimate defeating their best interests...but their too short-sighted to see it.

What we've experienced the last 2 years is the total rule of greed and arrogance...a right-wing coup that has destroyed this country. But when you live with rose-colored glasses, listening to the hate radio echo chamber and are so shallow the GOOP mantra seems so right. So deadly right.

7. in the larger pic of the guy on the left...
a "usmc" tattoo is easily seen on his arm.

the signifigance? marines are trained to be merciless killing machines for their country. can we expect someone who is taught to not value human life to show respect for the 'enemy' dead?

11. The one that really kills me is...
The picture of the All-American, fresh-scrubbed girl rejoicing in the death of another human being. She looks like the captain of a cheerleading squad.

14. the picture is all-American
Have you seen the photos of lynchings in the South? Same smiles, men women children picnicking, posing in front of the mutilated corpses of the lynched guys, smiling...

And of course slaughters of native americans, parts of their bodies taken as souvenirs, same with japanese killed in WWII.

This kind of thing is very all-American.

12. think Nazis with corpses of Jews
Just as for Nazis Jews were vermin, subhuman, so too for many Americans Arabs, Muslims, Iraqis are not human, they are subhuman.

That explains a lot, and when the orders come from the very top -- from the Bush white house -- to use torture against people picked up at random from the street, the racism is being approved by the commander in chief, and this is what the result is.

18. Its kinda funny but
If what some people believe to be true turns out to be true then these people may well not wind up in a very warm place while great people like Ghandi do. Thats actually part of the problem. Thinking that some people deserve to be punished for eternity. What do you think they were thinking when they did these things? They thought they were serving up just punishment.

24. I don't believe they were thinking at all
just behaving like animals. But maybe it's time we start thinking what this whole "Supporting the troops" business is all about. I am not a pacifist; I know that war is a very messy business and lots of innocent people get hurt or killed totally by accident. But this mistreatment of prisoners... this is inexcusable. It puts us on the same level as the Nazis. It's a crime against humanity, a crime under international law, and the negation of everything we are supposed to stand for as a nation. And the fact that it's seemingly so widespread shows that it has approval at the highest levels.

16. Define good and evil
Most people believe themself to be good. When determining what they wnat to do they do so within the context of what they believe to be good.

Depending on the the ideas of what they believe to be good people can be seen to commit all manner of acts that to others will seem utterly without any morality.

The mindset in operation here is that they believe themself to be dealing with something other than human. They believe these people to be subhuman. They may even believe that their actions serve some form of justice. They believe themselves to be the good guys.
