How Iraqis really feel about the Americans.
I'm pretty sure I know - like Molly Ivins said, it's hard to convince people you are freeing them by killing them. However, I have a RW brother that I have an e-mail going with and he is spewing out the Fox line that Saddam needed to go, they are better off without him, the majority love us and only the bad stuff gets reported. Where can I get a real objective analysis of Iraqi sentiment?

2. Probably somewhere in between
but the trend isn't good.

Problem is: there is a serious credibility problem, for obvious reasons. They don't trust us, and rightly so. There is no way we can win that trust in any kind of near-term scenario.

The Iraq "mission" is doomed, and always has been.

3. The Falluja Soccer Stadium
Ask him to explain mass graves.

Ask him about the gratitude of the Marsh Arabs like al-Sadr.

Josh Marshall had a pices earlier this week from an ex-military intelligence type who complained about Humvees with guns protruding and pointed at every approching vehicle, even though it was a clearly marked CPA vehicle.

Our troops are inexperienced, scared, outmanned, outgunned and act it.

A 16 year old boy was molested in order to get to his father, that's our side of the story, imagine what the Iraqi's are being told.

If ignorace is bliss, then your brother must live in a constant state of euphoria.

4. You need to google up the USA Today-CNN Poll of Iraqis
There were several posts, and I put some extracts of it up.

It showed that, while a majority of Iraqis would feel less secure if we left, a clear majority wanted us to leave.

While few had any direct contact with U.S. troops, they held a majority bad opinion of their behavoir post-war.

It was not a pretty snapshot.

5. There was a post here yesterday about a Kurd (our ally) saying he had
Never seen it so bad in Iraq, even under Saddam. Saddam didn't like the Kurds and did all he could to eliminate them. This Kurd says it was still better under Saddam.

8. Freedom: Its all about who is defining the freedom
If we had rolled into Iraq under flags bearing a star and a crescent we may well have been welcomed as heroes. Instead we came in under the stars and stripes.

Our freedom may not be the Iraqi's sense of freedom. If that is the case then we are not their liberators. We are their new oppressors. By trying to force them into a freedom of our defintion we are imposing our culture and identity upon them. And no culture gladdly suffers the destruction of its identity.
