America in "Deep Moral Gutter"
On NOW with Bill Moyers tonight, a member of the NYC Bar Association was discussing the secret memos in the Bush administration calling the Geneva Conventions "quaint." He said that if we've reached the point where we're discussing whether or not torture is O.K., then we (as a nation) have fallen into a deep moral gutter.

If that's the case, then why do all the moralizers promote Bush?

His economic policy is a violation of Biblical principles.

His support of the death penalty (including his mocking those who he authorized to be executed) is a violation of Biblical principles.

His insistence on attacking and occupying Iraq was mostly based on lies (see the 10 Commandments) and went against the views of most churches in the world (except those here, which have merged with the state).

Bush is immoral and he's taking the country to hell with him.

2. Simple, Bush is the Anti-Christ
Take that literally, figuratively, or metaphorically, it's the only decent explanation I can come up with.

3. Yup
Several (self-professed devout) Christian women that I "know" from several messageboards seem to be going through some serious contortions to justify the abuse of the prisoners.

At least one of them seems to have demoralized them in her mind. It is charming, to say the least.

6. WTF do you think?
According to them, we've been violating Mosaic law for two million years (yes, I recognize the anachronism) so they're perfectly within their rights to violate those that have only been in place the last fifty or so. This surprises -- let alone morally enrages you -- exactly how?

Pass down some knowledge from the mountain.

And I guess my threshold for moral outrage is low.

7. Charles Graner the joyous torturer
of the Abu Ghraib Inquisition, has a "Jesus" license plate with a cross on his pick-up. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04129/313195.stm This could be Jerry Falwell's poster boy, a neocon missionary, it's their "vision" in action. Take a good look. And to think we dare to ridicule the beliefs of others....?

8. Why? Because they're evil, that's why
Moralizers are only interested in control of other people after all, and they never try to live by the rules they set for other people. Bush came out before the healing process was done for us, and started a media campaign that was based on reveling in our anger. In effect, the administration promised us that anything and everything we want to do from now on, we are entitled to, because we are better than the rest of the world. So now we see the effects: US sponsored torture chambers, cries for all-out extermination of anyone who even looks Arabic, and a still-sizeable part of the population that has lost so much human empathy that they simply can't bring themselves to care.

11. I think the people of our country need some
common moral ground and we're losing it.

Being a liberal, of course, I think the liberals have a better handle on it than other people.

But even then, some would just throw morals out the window and declare that it's every man or woman for his or her self and who gives a fuck about anyone else, anyway.

Or so it seems.
