1. Bush didn't have any "actionable intelligence" that Chalabi was a spy...
Why shouldn't he have trusted him?

5. Oh, I don't know......maybe because he was a world class con artist
that was convicted of stealing millions in bank fraud/embezzlement charges in Jordan might have been a clue?

9. To the Bush crowd, that just means he's "one of the guys"
It wouldn't raise any red flags for them.

11. Yes, but wouldn't that have endeared him to Bush
as one of his kind? Think Harken, and other scams Bush has been behind.

4. If it was true that Chalabi was a spy, he would be dead...

This is all a big PR stunt because they are going to install Chalabi as head of the new puppet government and they want the Iraqis to think that he isnt a US puppet.

Is everyone here this gullible?

6. My earlier post
I think that their is more to this story than what is being told. This may be the scapegoat bush is looking for- or maybe they are setting him up as the next leader of Iraq. As you already know- the Iraqi people will not accept any leader that is liked by the USA. The more that CHALABI distances himself from the US- the better chance that he can get a leadership role and be a US puppet at the same time.

7. So you don't think he'll be a bad guy like all the rest?
Edited on Fri May-21-04 11:03 PM by TroubleMan
I think he was playing both sides.

I still have my doubt about the whole story, but if it's true, it's not suprising. He would be just another in a long list.

(on edit)
They're going to let him on Nightline and he's not under arrest, but he's just another lying asshole we've propped up.

Gonna' be bad for us one way or the other.

10. Yes, I am that gullible

There's a mass-delusion running around here that our government is of one mind and one voice. The bulk of US career military and intelligence and the entire diplomatic corps and Paul Bremer and his people all despise Chalabi, so why are leaks about him obviously disinformation?

The entire executive branch is shaking apart right now--settling old scores, covering asses, promoting agendas... it's like a prison riot. (For instance, when Tommy Franks recently described Doug Feith as "the fucking dumbest person on the planet" that's wasn't part of a global conspiracy. Franks, in fact, despises Feith.)

Chalabi really is a double agent. And there are a thousand reasons we might need him alive for a while. We are not building his anti-US credibility. Outing someone as an Iranian spy isn't exactly a path to street credibility in Iraq. (In fact, if one needs to assume the story is fake it's probably intended to discredit Chalabi in Iraq. Not that he needs help, because he already has no credibility in Iraq.)

Bear in mind that the source for this article is not DIA, it is someone who was briefed by DIA; most likely CIA or State or perhaps uniformed military:
