1. a movie about torture came out as Bush started his torture program
Gibson heavily promoted his movie among Christian churches that are part of Bush's base. I think people's motives are a little more complicated than we express on DU.

Gibson was heavily pressured by Bush to back off financing Moore from what I remember.

According to MM, there were negotiations for Gibson to back the movie, but he pulled out. MM didn't sound angry about that. I believe Miramax, via the Weinsteins, financed the movie all along.
