Florida Woman Bucks US Fines for Visiting Iraq to Oppose War
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines03/0811-08.htm"SARASOTA, Fla. -- A retired schoolteacher who went to Iraq to serve as a "human shield" against the U.S. invasion is facing thousands of dollars in U.S. government fines, which she is refusing to pay.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury said in a March letter to Faith Fippinger that she broke the law by crossing the Iraqi border before the war. Her travel to Iraq violated U.S. sanctions that prohibited American citizens from engaging in "virtually all direct or indirect commercial, financial or trade transactions with Iraq.""
Halliburton and other corporations have repeatedly done far more with and within Iraq before the war. Why haven't they been held to the same scrutiny and rules? Shouldn't we be demanding our congressmen to hold these corporations to the same rule of law?
I believe that if she actually faces doing time in prison, someone of wealth should pay her fines, or we should set up a website to take donations to pay her fines.
What do you think about both of these issues?
