Bush's new senior speechwriter -- formerly Rummy's, Helms'
This news may signal something significant.

Bush has a new senior speechwriter. His former senior speechwriter was Michael Gerson, formerly employed by Chuck Colson and an evangelical fundamentalist first and foremost.

The new speechwriter was Rummy's speechwriter and before that worked for Jesse Helms.

This could signal a strategic shift in direction. Keep an eye on the style and subtext of Bush's speeches. He may be playing to a different audience than the fundie base now.

Here's the blurb: "Marc A. Thiessen, longtime spokesman for former Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Jesse Helms (R-N.C.) and more recently chief speechwriter for Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, has moved over to the White House to be senior speechwriter for President Bush."

5. I suspect you nailed it
Bush* must be figuring that he has the fundie vote sewn up tight. I bet there will be fewer subtle biblical allusions in his speeches from now on.
