Maria Cantwell, Senator from Washington
Edited on Wed May-26-04 02:16 PM by narcjen
just out of curiosity? What do you all think (or know) of her?

She appears on C-span and caught my eye a couple of times while channel-surfing but I don't know anything about her. Other than that she seems very intelligent, well-spoken, (and nice to look at). I've heard nothing about here on DU or anywhere else. She seems to keep a very low media profile. Thanks.

1. She's great!
I used to live in Seattle and miss having her as my Senator. Actually, I never took myself off her e-mail list just so I could get an update from her every so often.

She is one of the good ones. We need more people like her.

2. I live in Washington state
I'm not nuts about Maria Cantwell.

Ms. Cantwell voted for the IWR. I seem to remember calling her office repeatedly during the runup to the IWR vote and asking her staff to tell her to vote "no," they claimed they were "polling" and she'd "decide how to vote later." I finally asked one of her staffers to get a clean piece of copy paper, write on it with huge letters, "Which party sent you to Washington, Senator Cantwell?" and hang it on her office door with my name and phone number on it.

I might also add that I walked out of a small fundraiser in a private home when she arrived a few months back.

Maria also seems to consistently vote with the DLC.

Homeland Gestapo. As another poster said...yeah her heart is in the right place alright. Just not in my location.

4. She's done a good job on environmental issues
She worked quite hard protecting forests in Washington as well as being a strong opponent of last year's Republican energy bill. She was against drilling in ANWR. You can see some of her priorities on the environment in her newsletter from two weeks ago.

http://cantwell.senate.gov/newsletter/environment.pdf

I understand that she isn't going to win the activist of the year award from Earth First, nor is she out there stumping for universal health care like Kucinich, but she does more good than harm and her heart is in the right place.

Considering some of our other Senators...

8. Kerry's state campaign manager--
--and a lot like him. Good on the environment, but too wussy to oppose the war or NAFTA/WTO. Lots better than Slade Gorton, though. Typical DLC.
