Shepard Smith is straight.
Edited on Wed May-26-04 04:10 PM by Paragon
Until he says otherwise. End of discussion.

Regardless of the individual, it is a choice that must be respected. There are still many people of a nobler political stripe who continue to make this choice.

Do we out them, too?

ON EDIT: I'm pretty sure the morans watching Fox News think that every on-air personality on the network has "heterosexual" on their resumes. Of course straight is not the "default".

We could just make fun of his horrid makeup.

You could do irreparable harm to him by reporting his heterosexuality, the most private of all things.

3. Still not quite right
Shep Smith's sexual orientation is unknown unless he chooses to make it known. (Why have Straight as the default position? I've never heard Smith say he was straight or say he was gay.)

Best handling of this sort of thing was when a tabloid said Tom Selleck was gay and he called a press conference to let his Friends know he was straight and he hadn't been deceiving them all these years. When asked whether he would sue the tabloid he said (paraphrase), "for what? If there's nothing wrong with being gay it's not defamation."

Bingo, and bravo: "Why have Straight as the default position?"

(Btw, Keanu Reeves & Matt Damon have both made statements similar to Selleck's.)

I make no such assumptions anywhere else.

Besides, this thread is merely a response to this one:

7. Out 'em all
gay teens commit suicide every day because of shame. A huge portion of my generation of gay men is dead because nobody much cared when AIDS was only killing "fags".

The world would be an infinitely better place for gays and lesbians if every gay person came out today.

Things ARE much better today than 20 years ago. Why? Because more people started coming out. People learned that the "fags" they hate are their brothers, their sons, their uncles, their friends.

The closet is deadly, not just for those in it, but for all gays and lesbians.

Out 'em all.

but I have consistently counseled them to come out themselves.

But I would have no hesitation outing a guy who has choisen to whore himself for a right-wing pimp like Murdoch.

29. Ah
the sig-line insult. Congratulations, only a few dozen people before you have made that obvious joke. You should be proud. But if you'll read the whole thing, you'll see it applies to you as well as me.

"Outing" generally refers to outing people in the public eye. The discussions here have all focused on outing famous people. There is benefit to doing that. I believe they should be outed, and as I said, I consistently counsel non-famous personal acquaintances to come out themselves.

Sorry we couldn't discuss the topic without it devolving into personal attacks.

30. Obviously, you missed Oprah today.
George Michael was on for the full hour. Thank goodness he came out on his own volition, and....oh.

Never mind.

Bottom line, the choice is not yours to make -- and "counseling" them on their choice assumes they are fools who have not already considered it themselves and the unfortunate consequences that come along with it.

I never said I was talking out of my ass -- you did. It's not an insult if you admit to it first.

34. The failure of the categorical imperative
re: The world would be an infinitely better place for gays and lesbians if every gay person came out today.

Assuming that's true, that still doesn't give license for individual acts of outing.

(Perhaps it would be better if *everyone* voted for Ralph Nader, but that's a poor argument for voting for him.)

on a path towards irrelevancy (when the right completely runs itself into the ground, and the media that worked as bushco propoganda begins to be recognized for what it really is.)

The rest, imo... also irrelevant.
