Hunter Thompson's ESPN column was censored!
http://washingtontimes.com/national/20040525-113028-7558r.htm

snip beginning crap from the Moonie WTimes ...

Meanwhile, sundry journalists trotted out Nazi themes and overblown comparisons.
Before his ESPN column was sanitized by editors yesterday, Hunter S. Thompson wrote that the prisoner-abuse images were worse than "the foulest atrocities of Adolf Hitler."
The published reference was later tidied up to read, "worse than anything I could have imagined."
ESPN spokeswoman Ashley Swadell confirmed yesterday that "a portion of the column was removed because some readers found the Hitler reference offensive."

Here's is Thompson recent ESPN column and commentary about the Iraq Prison Scandal ...

Yes, sir. We have taken the bull by the horns on this one, sports fans. These horrifying digital snapshots of the American dream in action on foreign soil are worse than anything even I could have expected. I have been in this business a long time and I have seen many staggering things, but this one is over the line. Now I am really ashamed to carry an American passport.

Fecking ESPN ...

...that they haven't booted him altogether. He's been pretty wild again lately.

I like him like that myself, but I'm not surprised that ESPN doesn't.

4. I've been amazed
I'm a big admirer of his writing but I was amazed to see him getting a voice at ESPN. The man is worth reading for his style and prose alone IMO. Though I'm sad to see him censored I hope he keeps the job and turns unsuspecting ESPN readers to his writing and ideas.

5. Ummmm....he's a major force in Sports reporting/writing...
If you read Kingdom of Fear and a few of his other writings you'll see how he's still quite the man to be reckoned with on sports issues. Odd, yes, but he's still powerful as ever. I will respect this man to the end, he's one of the best political writers out there today and he has the most distinctive voice of any writer in the last 100 years.

Hunter will not stand for this, I can only imagine the rage in him right now and fear for anything within range of his guns in Colorado...

6. Kingdom of Fear
its in my queue I have been meaning to read it forever. Gotta get to it. I didn't mean to disparage Hunter's status with my post I was just thinking that he and ESPN were kind of a funny match. You are right, I wouldn't want to be in range of Mr Duke's many firearms at this moment :)

7. Frankly...

...despite his credentials, I'm surprised that he's still there. The media has been so intolerant of anyone who is in opposition to Bush, or who attempts to "politicize" supposed non-political situations, that I would believe, if Jesus himself landed on the White House lawn and pointed a finger of accusation and eternal judgement at Shrub, that He'd get censored or decimated by the press.

8. They were right to
Look, the abuses are horrible and I want the whole admin out but you don't compare that to 6,000,000 dead.
